Are LED Lights cheap to run?

Options
Hi,
I have some parts of the house that I dont get any daylight and need to be constantly illuminated (not least the stairwell). I know LED lights are cheap to run. If I bought a string of LEDs - how much would they cost annually to leave on constantly? Are there LEDs that are designed to be left on 24/7? I only need very low levels of light - just enough to see where the bottom step is etc... Ideally I would need one of the lights to be battery powered because theres no convenient mains socket.
Thanks

    In a word no.

What you need to look at is lumens per watt to compare different light sources running costs. Leaving a luminaire on permanently will certainly be wasteful and the likely solution would be movement detectors. Battery powered lights will cost a fortune in batteries.

You will require at least 100 lux on the stairs.

In terms of light fitting there are still considerable problems with LEDs in terms of continuous operation and to obtain a reasonable unit the cost is very high.

My advice is to stick with fluorescent fittings with built it movement sensors.

It depends on the type of lamp and wattage.

If you want it to remain on constantly, choose a good branded LED lamp.

The cost of running will depend on the wattage (2W, 5W, 7W etc.). The cost will be significantly less than a normal bulb and lower than a compact fluorescent.

LED lamps have different colour temperatures. The cheaper ones tend to have a slightly blueish hue.
