DVD to divX software. Can anyone recommend any?

I would like to back up my home DVD's (nothing saucy) to my PC. I've got some software that will convert them to mpegs but the files are huge and the quality rubbish.

I've been told that divx encoded files are much better, and I've done a bit of googleing but I'm having trouble picking out some software that is from a name I recognise or that comes with a recommendation from a trust worthy source.

Can anyone advise me of any software that will do the trick? Or even names to avoid?
