Wrong start meter readings....

I recently moved into a rented property - the landlord rather went and set up all the utility bills in my partners name without our permission and this caused a lot of issues as I already had accounts in my name which I had transfered to the new property we ended up being chased for money twice!

Anyway he also set up the electric and gas accounts which have now caused a bit of a nightmare as these were set up totally incorrect - he for some reason put us down as a business, and thus we were put onto a totally insane plan with ludicrous rates - I finally managed to correct this however, he also had given them start meter readings which too were wrong. This has resulted in a bit of a headache as our gas readings are now over 200 units out.
We've been here just over a month but its only just come to light that this has happened. Ive informed the suppliers that the reading they had was incorrect however they don't seem to want to listen and they are saying that was the reading they were given as a start reading and they won't change it now. As a result Im facing a bill for almost £200 for gas Ive not even used.

My true usuage is pretty low, less than 40 units for the month - so its obvious to me that Ive not used the best part of 250 but the suppliers won't have any of it :o

Any suggestions?

charlie, take a read today then one 7 days apart. deduct todays read from 7 day read and then divide by 7 that gives you youre average daily usage. then call your supplier give them the reads and advise your llord has used incorrect opening reads and ask them to backcalculate what your opening read should have been. that might sort the problem and they might change the opening read to a more realistic figure change of tenancy read, but they might turn round and say its a 3rd party dispute between you and your llord. worth a try. tam

You can't transfer accounts over from one property to another. When you move, you are in a deemed account with the existing supplier. You need to register with them and then switch.

Have you registered your household with a supplier, and if so, when?
