Returning a non-faulty laptop for a refund

Options
My partner foolishly came home with a new laptop yesterday and now regrets the decision. It was purchased from currys, whose 'knowhow' guys preinstalled all the microsoft/virus stuff for a nominal charge. Anyway, to cut it short, what are the chances of a refund?

Any input and 'strategies' gratefully received. i will be going in to sort it tomorrow as partner too embarrassed to return.

You have no rights to return whatsoever, only the purchaser can legally return an item. And as there is nothing wrong with the laptop your partner is entirely at the mercy of Curry's own return policy. Looking at the Currys website I think you could well be OK, but really it does need to be your partner who takes it back. If your partner isn't 'man' (obviously I don't know what sex either of you are) enough to do it then don't be surprised if Currys are awkward.

    You have changed your mind

If you change your mind and would like to return your product, we're happy to exchange or refund it as long as:
    • The product is in its original unopened and sealed packaging
    • You return it within 21 days of date of purchase
    • You have proof of purchase (Original receipt, delivery note, bank statement)

How do I return my product?
Store: If you need to have your product collected (if it's too big or heavy to return to store) please call our Contact Centre on
    08445 61 12 34
    and we will assist you.
Phone: If you need to have your product collected (if it's too big or heavy to return to store) please call our Contact Centre on
    08445 61 12 34
    and we will assist you.

Exchange/Refund: We will then give you an exchange or full refund plus any delivery charge paid. However, we do have the right to retain any charge paid for services which have already begun or have been completed.

Did you just stick to verbal abuse or did you hit him as well? :D

As the laptop isn't in its unopened, sealed packaging any longer as per the returns policy above, I doubt you have any actual rights to return it. You sound like quite a persuasive person though who might be able to get it returned out of goodwill if you try hard enough! Let us know how it goes.

I am not sure, if they have installed software etc., it will count as:

The product is in its original unopened and sealed packaging
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

I don't think they will even entertain the idea tbh, with him having paid to have software installed.

I wondered the same thing, why 'foolishly' if it is waht he wanted to buy, presumably it was his money, . Does he tell you waht to do with your money.

Wow, some partner you are calling him names and probably browbeating him into thinking it was 'foolish' I know what I'd be telling you missus.

And he will too if youre not careful.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Unfortunately as the laptop has been opened (regardless of if it was opened in store or at home (they both boil down to the same thing, your partner gave permission to let them open it to setup)) it would be impossible to resell the item again in its current state due to the fact you may of put files on / infected etc etc and isn't clean (data wise) for anyone else so the store will rightly so refuse to exchange or refund the system.

You can of course try, but if the store follows their own returns policy then think of other ways of using the laptop (either use it, or sell it on yourselves).
