  • Hi.

Do you have a water softener? The salt in a bucket type.

Hi, no we don't have a water softener of any type.

    Ha!

    Slapped with a red herring!

You will need (in no particular order):

    A new pressure relief valve.

The expansion vessel pressure topped up or maybe a new E.V.

You may also need additional expansion capacity to allow for the (probably) large-ish system you have.

Not the best of boilers ,but with regular maintenance should go for a while longer.

The pressure relief pipe does not need to go to drain as long as it doesn't present a hazard if it discharges hot water/steam. It should point back to the wall at least.

A decent RGI will sort you out.

Hope you don't feel too fleeced ;):).

  • Thanks, Canucklehead. I'm a bit confused - with this talk of water softeners and redherrings!! Please could you give me a very ball park idea of how much these parts are likely to cost and how many hours work it's likely to be - just 20 mins, half a day, 2 days etc so i've got an idea. Should this be covered by the Npower service plan? I don't think the system is that big - 9 rads (two of them small) and a towel rail heating thing in case this makes any difference to your opinion.

    Hi.

    1) A water softener has an overflow, in white plastic, to outside. That's what it sounded like to me.

    2) No idea.

    3) I don't know what the service plan covers.

    4) You probably don't need additional expansion with that size system. Just get the existing one sorted.

  • Thanks, again Canucklehead. Ah, I see with the water softener.

If anyone, has any ideas with the very ball park costing up for the job mentioned (expensive part of the country) that would be very helpful.

It may be that it's not cost effective for me to get Npower to look at it (their service plan is the same as the British Gas one I think, i've got Homecare 50 central heating cover) even if they do cover this - in my mind I was only going to phone them if the boiler stopped producing heat or hot water not if one rad wasn't hot enough.

    thanks everyone xx
