HELP needed please with house alarm problem

Posted the following under 'in my home' yesterday but had no response. Just been woken up agan this morning by the noise again. The trouble light is back on! Am scared to leave house in case it goes off again and thinking of getting the whole thing turned off while I decide what to do.
Any thoughts anyone?

I know ultimately I need to get an engineer out, but thought I'd ask anyway:

Last night, the alarm panel box started going off inside and said there was a fault on the landing. After I keyed in our code the noise stopped. The trouble light stayed on.

This morning there are no lights on the alarm at all. The clock is working, so presumably it's not lack of power causing no light.

I had all the batteries in the monitors replaced last year along with the battery in the main box, so I assume it's not a battery problem (plus the fault isn't listed as a low battery).

So the questions are:
1. Any ideas what might have caused the lights to go out?
2. What the fault on the landing might be (and whether it's costly)?
3. If I leave the alarm as it is and don't use it, will it be OK or is the alarm likely to do weird things (like go off etc!)?

Any ideas/suggestions appreciated so I can think about what I want to do before calling an (expensive) engineer.

Thanks!

Assumin that you have a wired alarm system ,not wireless -Most of these alarm systems have a "tamper" circuit ,which copes with the situation of someone trying to cut wires( to the alarm sounder for instance). HOWEVER, any wiring fault can cause this tamper circuit to fire- for instance on mine the wiring in the loft to the upstairs landing circuit had corroded causing the alarm to go off randomly.
