First time buyer - Government help available?

Hello fellow money savers!
I am looking for some advice about buying a house. I am a first time buyer and hope to buy a small flat later this year in Scotland. My family keep telling me that the government are “doing something” to help first time buyers get on the property ladder. Unfortunately everyone is rather vague about what this something might be and I fear it is more wishful thinking than government policy. Does anyone have any info about this or is it all a work of fiction?

Well, they're not going to give you any money I'm afraid!

They have upped the stamp duty threshold to £125,000 to include more people that don't have to pay.
They are encouraging the building of affordable homes eg. shared ownership. (which often doesn't work out much cheaper than just buying the place outright)
It doesn't amount to much.
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
