BT annual bill

Hi
My Mam has paid in advance for her BT landline for a year which expires in September. She doesnt often live in the house anymore just tries to pop home and make the 2 calls a month she needs to save the £10 non use charge a month.
Is there any way she can cancel the contract early and get a refund as she is unlikely to be wanting to use it as she isnt living there permenantly (sue to illness and the fact her hourse in up for sale and she wants to keep it presentable) and stays at her sisters or ours and uses our phone.
Thanks in advance

I think you'll find BT sewed that one up very well in the T&Cs associated with Line Rental Saver.Line Rental Saver refund policy – If you cancel Line Rental Saver within seven working days of your order you will get a full refund of your advance payment to the debit or credit card you paid with. Otherwise the advance payment is non-refundable.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

If your mother is on the £10/month line rental saver deal, than the charge for not making 2 calls a month is £1.50 not £10. (though you should also make sure that she has cancelled the free caller display service and the free 1571 service if she has them to avoid other non usage charges)

I'd like to query this since just finished online 'chat' with BT rep and I specifically stated that only wanted a 'line' costing either 129 up front or 14.60/month. My question to the rep was why was I going to be charged 2.70 + 1.02 for the 'free calling features' of all plans IF I failed to make min 2 calls per month. If your mother is on the £10/month line rental saver deal, than the charge for not making 2 calls a month is £1.50 not £10. The rep could not care less, simply stating that that's what you will be charged if not make min 2 calls per month.
I also stated that imho, it's a bit rich since the 'up front' blurb on all pages liberally uses the "FREE" word concerning these forced upon you calling features.
iow, those not able to use phone for whatever reason must pay what can easily be described as a non-use surcharge.
I was getting prepped to leave VM after 15+yrs but no way now. Better the devil (you think you know) than the one you do not, imho.
Anyone suggest a true [and ethical] 100% transparent provider???

Hi ukuwi,
With BT you will be only charged if you don't make a minimum of 2 calls per month. Their reason for this is due to the fact they are offering you a free service, and would like to ensure that your are using them for your calls (and not another service provider). The same thing applies to the Line Rental payment.
As for transparency, I always read the T&C's before I sign up with any company. Other companies will have similar stipulations so please be careful.

Hello findingnemo, thinking you for input.
'offering' a free service? Not understand. I pay rental for a line, being the payed for service I wish to have. But they are not offering, they state free and then charge you if not use what I payed for - the line rental. Other posters have stated in other threads that this 2 call min causes unwanted stress and agro especially if not eg: living at the house (for whatever reason). Not believe one should be charged for not using a line - my choice, I pay line rental full stop, up to me if wanna use it - imho.
Regards using other providers (piggyback?). I have also been with OneTel using their phonePal device connected to Virgin line. 100% of my outgoing calls are directed to OneTel and have been for too many years to remember.
I never/ever have charges levied on my VM monthly bill due to zero phone line use. ie, my monthly phone bill from them is £0.0 call charges + current line rental + ridiculously low BB rental. Not a cent more. Obviously, OneTel bills me for any call charges but 99.9% of time under 5 quid.
My answer is to stick with VM tel + broadBand(NO capping) which is (currently) at 2OMB for a heavily discounted price...
I'll then use landline with MSE cheap call providers as and when as OneTel can be beat in some areas! Plus for simplicity use my asda/vodafone payg sim @10p/min flat for calls to any network any time. No connect fees etc.
I'd class myself as a total non phone user when compared to joe public. This is why I refuse to get involved with BT just so I can pay them money for their free service which I am 'forced' to take...
(let's face it, a very clever but underhand method to bring in extra small sums each month and when multiplied by potentially millions of customers - well is no longer just beer money is it!)
Regards transparency, yes T&C's MUST be read. How cute of modern co's to couch their underhand methods by always quoting the T&C's etc. So easy for them. Just the same old scam aka 'the small print' of old.
See how easy it is for BT? Liberally sprinkle FREE all over the place. Just like subliminal programming! So most signup thinking FREE...
BT/others know damn well the punter psychology. They play hard 'n loose with words and always, always they have the damn special chars annotations which leads one (if even bother to look) to the 'small print' and if really dedicated, one can sniff out a T&C's link or written address (on written material).
I firmly think is all wrong. At times, that's my cross to bear since let's face it - how easy to just NOT question all the time, yes?
Simplicity with total above board declarations - that's what I never see anywhere these days. Always the damn T&C's which it can be argued, only/perhaps/maybe a legal bod will have a clue!
