barclays bank charges

Options
Over christmas i accidently went over my overdraft limit.

When i checked my account at the ATM it said i was still under my limit (prob due to the bank hols) however, when i came back to london (i was home for xmas) i had several letters from barclays saying i was being charged £22 for going over then £8 for each transaction that was being bounced due to insufficant funds which they informed me was now £114!!!!

When i called to ask how on earth it could possibly be this much they said it was because i went into my reserve.

This is not something i asked for and if it was not there i would not of been allowed to go over my limit.

Does anyone know if there are rules to this? Barclays told me they could not refund charges that were not the fault of the banks!

Please help as i cant afford this fine! :(

It is up to the discretion of the bank if they chose to pay or bounce items. Some items wont give them the choice (cashpoint, debit card etc). They have to pay them.

If you cannot control your spending and you know what is going in and out then how do you expect a bank to make the right decision for you?

They are damned if they do and damned if they dont. If they bounce items people complain. If they pay them people complain.

Most banks will refund charges when it is your first offence. However, if you have done it before, then they are less likely to. You are totally reliant on their goodwill here. The fact they are not refunding any under goodwill suggests it is not your first mistake or you didnt endear yourself to the person you spoke to.
