Driving changes.

Options
I've noticed that I've become a little bit more anxious about driving recently.

I hate night driving and am parking in easier spots.

Anyone else feeling the same way?

Many older people start to find night driving difficult, very often because cataracts are starting to develop which make coping with oncoming headlights problematic.

    Same here.

I find that polarised night vision glasses make night driving less of a strain.

I always park in "easy" spaces because I have had cars dinged and dented before. I park well away from anyone else.

    Night driving arrrgh!

Just in the last 2 yrs the dazzle from oncoming headlights is really problematic. Had eyes tested, no problem there. The one nightime journey I have to do, I now have re-routed, through country lanes. A few more miles, but way easier, as there are far fewer cars and no-one tailgaiting me!

I dont drive at night anymore, at least not out of town, no problem in town though where there are lights. I lose the road in the dark if I rely solely on headlights.

And nothing to do with cataracts;)
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

I don't mind night driving lit or unlit roads or parking in tight spots, but I have found myself feeling a bit anxious about a particular drive occasionally so I get in the car and just do it, I've just got this feeling that it would be oh so easy to start making excuses not to drive places and I would miss it so much, I don't want to get in the position of being to scared to drive . So far its working fine thank goodness.

I've had my eyes tested recently - no problems. I've got night vision glasses and I'm going to follow scotsbob's advice and park accordingly.

tanith - a few of my friends are too scared to drive any distance now and I don't want that to happen to me. Independence is very important to me and my car helps me stay like that. I drive most days and sometimes for a fair distance.

Mind you, petrol prices may curtail driving so much in the future.

Just remembered that I started a thread about this on the motoring forum. Got some interesting responses plus the smattering of 'you shouldn't be on the road...' type of intolerance from the usual motoring forum suspects. Upset me a bit at the time. Anyway, here is the link if interested -

Lilac Lady I can understand how it happens oh too easily but as you say its your independence that's at stake. I also found I was letting my DH do all the driving when we went out together/on holidays so I put a stop to it and we tend to now take it turn. I do a fair bit of motorway driving too , having been a professional driver for 20 yrs I just can't imagine a day when I don't want to do it anymore.

I got some driving glasses which really helps with glare and sharpens objects more. I find it really useful at night and if that driver behind drives to close I just alter the rear view mirror which filters glare

I've never really enjoyed driving - I learnt fairly late in life, in my 40s, so I don't think it's ever been a natural thing for me. I'm a good driver though but this winter I've noticed that night driving makes me slightly anxious. I think this is probably due to the fact that I don't do it as often as I used, so I think the key is to keep on driving as much as possible and don't get out of the habit.
