White gloss paint

I have read on various threads on here that when using white gloss paint, it is better to use a water based one, as it will not yellow in the same way as other white gloss. My question is, what manufactureres make this, and where can I get it? I ask as I have looked in B and Q, Homebase, and Wilkinsons, and they do not seem to stock it, but only sell paint which needs turps/ white spirit to clean the brushes after use.

Most manufacturers make it, Dulux etc often sold as quick drying gloss. The Dulux stuff was pretty poor last time I used it, so for the last project I swapped to Ronseal Diamond Hard wood paint (water based and a gloss finish). Even that isn't quite as good (not quite the glass smooth finish due to the quicker drying time) as the traditional oil based gloss paints like Dulux Professional, but I'm hoping it will stay white longer. It was certainly better than the Dulux stuff. The bigger B&Q stores have the Ronseal stuff but it tends to be with the specialist paints rather than the standard gloss paints.

Gloss is horrible to use - I always use Satin now

Edit: Maybe your friends are talking about Satin?
  • I don't know whether it's just a pragmatic response to the fact that satin is much more pleasant stuff to work with or an actual change in trends but satin paint seems to be much more fashionable now than gloss. It is also more similar to the eggshell paint that would have been used in period properties so is more authentic than gloss for traditional finishes.

B&Q and Homebase both sell it, but it may not be with the gloss paint. You need to ask for satin finish.

Leyland paints are excellent if you have a local trade centre.

Thanks for your replies. I do tend to use satin everywhere else, but thought that gloss was more hard wearing for a bathroom - any thoughts on this?
  • I've just been looking for white gloss paint and the one that gets rave reviews is from Wickes. It's the same price as leading brands and says it doesn't go yellow

There are acrylic paints, and polyurethane paints. Apparently some are quite good. Sikkens Rubbol BL is said to be good, but satin. Caparol is said to be decent too. I have read that you need to add something like Floetrol to improve the flow, and preserve the wet edge for long enough. Google and you will find lots of recommendations from pro deccies. I'm just an amateur.

I tested loads of paints. Hated the Dulux Quick Dry, liked Ronseal Diamond gloss, but went for Sikkens Satura Plus which is an oil based satin paint with very good yellowing resistance as it does not contain linseed oil. But it is pricey. I also tested Dulux oil based white gloss and it went yellow after a few months. :rotfl:

Take care with water based paints as they often need many more coats to get a good finish.

I tested a tin of that and it was pretty nice. I had issues with runs though.

If you go for oil based paint, get yourself a BrushMate. Oh, and use good brushes.
