My husband often says he is a diabetic.
i also have diabetes and find diabetic offensive and would never use that word, like epileptic its a word that tries to define you and i would never let a condition or illness define me as a person0 -
well i find it offensive and i have epilepsy NOTE i am NOT an epileptic,my condition DOESNT define me !
people who have epilepsy are exactly that anything else is offensive and or condescending, and no professional would EVER use either term
I understand you find "epileptic" offensive and prefer to be called a person who has epilepsy, and I'll be more careful in future.
But you find "brainstorm" offensive; would you prefer "thought shower"? I've never used "brainstorm" in this context, but I would say "seizure".
edit OK I think I finally got the point. You say, and the lecturer said, that the word brainstorm should never be used in any context as it's offensive to people with epilepsy/as people with epilepsy find it offensive. I'd never come across that suggestion before, but then, I don't often use the word brainstorm.0 -
that article refers to a survey 7 years ago, maybe we should go even futher back in time and lock everyone with epilepsy in an institution
i really dont believe the sh!te i read on here sometimes !
It was the top search result. After I read your post, I repeated the search. I found, as top results, this thread, and the survey I posted, and some posts on OUCH that are very similar to the survey results; they're dated 2008. I didn't find anything more recent.0 -

Let the National / International [ British fixation again ] and the above MSE poll speak for itself. The fact of the matter is an almost 100% of the UK population were not [STRIKE]manipulated[/STRIKE] persuaded after a huge amount of money was spent by a lobby group on behalf of one singular charity to change the language of the nation.
Epileptic's do not agree, they too think 'brainstorming' means .. .. err brainstorming.
The UK population do not agree, they too think 'brainstorming' means .. .. err brainstorming.
Both groups do not connect brainstorming with Epileptic's
Lawyers do, and individuals who employ layers do .. .. if they think they can 'cry' the old 'I'm victimised' - gimme some money or else.
Epileptic's are not a victim of language they are the victim of their illness.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. I try to be an even-handed poster and accept that you at times may not agree with these opinions or how I choose to express them, this is not my problem. You should define yourself, not let others define for you. Taking offense to words that are not meant to cause offense is, in my opinion crazy. Soon the English language will only contain 20 words because all the rest have been deemed inappropriate.0

It seems quite a trait these days to be looking for things/expressions etc to take offence at. There are some real nit picking people around...or is that offensive to nit nurses if they still exist?0 -
When I did my teacher-training, well over 10 years ago, we were warned against using the term 'brainstorming'.
I have mild seizures/blackouts (originally GP thought it was epilepsy, now it is considered more likely part of my ASD). ....I have two nieces with epilepsy....I have worked with many, many young people with epilepsy.....and not one has had any objection to the term 'brainstorming'.0 -
Epileptic, diabetic, they are just words, like brain storming. They aren't offensive, they aren't intended to be offensive, and most people don't take offense by them. It's all this political correctness rubbish that is causing all of this.
Words don't define who you are, illnesses, diseases, conditions, do not define the person that you are. The only thing that does that, is yourself. You define who you are, not what is or isn't wrong with you.0
