Posting in the open which can be viewed and moderated by the rest of the group gives the vulnerable protection. That same protection and oversight can not be available when people go off forum to the dark and hidden world of Private Messaging.

I caution anyone reading this to think twice when being encouraged to go to Private Messaging. It's just not necessary.

I would be very careful about talking with people via pm- there are some unpleasant characters around (and I am not aiming that at any poster in particular and this is a general warning) and in my one of my previous real life jobs have seen many instances of people claiming to be ill (either mentally of physically) to gain attention from a forum group.

It may seem harmless, if time wastiing but some of the lengths people go to is quite extraordinary and result in people, who may well be vulnerable themselves, becoming ill from the strain and worry.

I would always recommend that whilst we remain sympathetic to all, MSE and similar online communities are not the venue for getting help and all posters should be directed to the real sources of help.

Im interested in how people actually get diagnosed, I never seem to see more than a GP, or at a push a CPN, none of which seem interested in actually
diagnosing anything, and prefering to just stick with depression/anxiety.

Others, seem to have assessments from physchiatrists/mental health teams etc, is it just area dependant, some better than others, a post code lottery, or did you have to push for referalls etc?

    What was the process?
[greenhighlight]but it matters when the most senior politician in the land is happy to use language and examples that are simply not true.

The impact of this is to stigmatise people on benefits,
and we should be deeply worried about that

Believe it or not, some people diagnose themselves! They look things up on the Internet then decide that's what they must have too. Often they will list a whole series of disorders they suffer with, which they have diagnosed themselves with. Very often every diagnosis has the word 'Severe' in front of it.

Yes, it can depend on which Primary Health Care Trust you come under as to which the treatment you will be offered will be, especially where mental health is concerned. It isn't really the diagnosis that's important very often in mental health, it's having somebody to support you & who you can depend on in times of crisis. Psychiatry isn't an exact science & you could see 6 different psychiatrists & they each come up with a different diagnosis. The fact that you at least get to see a CPN is good, as in some areas this is really hard to achieve & at least means that somebody feels that you need that support. So, don't worry about try getting a label other than depression/anxiety as this is a general term used by the various mental health professionals & at least means they recognise that you do have a mental heath issue.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.
  • Your GP refers you to to the mental health team, you then have an assessment in which someone assess you to see if you meet the criteria for the mental health team, you can only get diagnosed by a psychaiatrist you may need to fill in questionnaires about how you are feeling, the psychaiatrist will probably look at your past history.

All mental health teams work differently and it can make it difficult to see someone. i think if you feel you need extra support you should tell your gp how you are feeling and push for a referral as some gp's can be reluctant to refer you

It is a lovely thought welshgirl, but there are a few trolls that seem to enjoy picking on the disabled, including (at least) one that has admitted "befriending" people by PM. :o

Are there any support groups in your area?
  • hmmm yes i suppose agree that a few people would take the mick out of people who are disabled a message for all of those out there that do take the mick is that you are all low lives and there is no need for any discrimination or abuse you just think how you would feel if someone was to do exactly the same to you i bet you wouldn't feel good so why do it. it makes me so angry that disabled people get all sorts of abuse. SHAME ON YOU.

Saw the doctor for about 3 months, asked repeatedly for a CMHT assessment, got nothing. Got worse, attempted suicide and then i finally got a referral for an assessment. Saw the psych and she gave me my diagnosis and i've been under her ever since. A few months into seeing her she allocated me a CPN. She's a useful as a chocolate teapot though she does seem to get me emergency appointments pretty quickly. At my old doctors my gp was great and i was able to talk to her and she'd put me on weekly appointments if i needed it, but since moving i changed doctors and they are crap. I hate seeing them, they just seem to want to dish out meds and see me on my way, so i pretty much never go even when i need to (like now-i've run out of meds).
