My weimaraner

Hi all,

Think I'm posting this more for symphathy from fellow dog lovers....than any other reason...maybe guilt?? We've just had our 10 1/2 yr old Weimaraner PTS. It was the hardest thing I've ever had to do. She has had many hormonal problems due to a tumour on her thyroid gland, she was pratically bald, covered in pressure sores and constantly drank because of a problem with Cushing's disease.

She has been on treatment for months and months. The vet told me an operation would have a very poor prognosis and I didn't want to put our dog through chemo.

The last few weeks we had noticed her eating was becoming increasingly difficult for her....swallowing was hard. The vet said due to positioning of her tumour her breathing could be something that would be problematic for her.

We decided to have her PTS as none of our family, including the kids, wanted to see the dog struggle to breath. We decided to do it sooner than later.

I know it was the right decision but I adored the dog and feel lost without her. She was very loyal to me and followed me everywhere....the house feels all wrong. I haven't been to work for 3 days as I can't stop crying.

Please tell me this is normal to grieve like this for a pet you adored?

  • Hi Miss P,

so sorry to hear of your loss, I think what you feel is perfectly normal, they are part of your family and as such it is natural to grieve.

    Sending you (hugs)

It's totally normal to grieve for a pet, often more so than a family member as they loved you every day without judging you.

Holding them at the PTS stage is the most loving and caring thing you can do for them.

Sorry to hear of your loss.

It is the most natural thing in the world to grieve like you are, I still shed a tear sometimes for my cats who have passed on months and even years ago. :o

You did the kindest thing that it is possible to do for a beloved pet - knowing when enough is enough.
  • Ahhhh MissPointy - so, sorry to hear this:(. Sadly has to be faced by us all but be grateful that we can give them a dignified / painfree send off - rather than letting any suffering happen / be prolonged.

(((hugs))) from me .... it will take a long time - you will have ups and downs and the grief hits you often at the most unexpected times .....

Run free wee one, play hard in the sunshine at the bridge ... young, happy and free again - please check on my Ben for me xx

So sorry for your loss Miss Pointy. Only someone who has loved and lost a pet can really understand.

Please don't feel at all guilty...you gave her the best possible life and loved her to the end, and by your sacrifice, you spared her any more pain and suffering.

When we had to have our lovely Clio crossbeed PTS (see my sig) we both cried for days - it's normal I think, they are family members (although people will say 'it's only a dog' - they don't understand!

People on here were so kind, and the comment that stuck with me was 'better a week too soon, than a day too late' - you made the right decision, hard though it seems at the time.

Remember the good times you had - she obviously had a good life with you, and you did the kindest thing you could.

Weimaraners are lovely dogs, 10 doesn't feel like any age at all to be losing a pet, such a shame. It would be abnormal not to grieve, you've lost a much-loved family member and it will take a good while to come to terms with the emptyness in the house. You can rest assured you did the right thing given the difficulty she was having; we all share your pain and I wish you well.

Hope you are ok. It's going to take time. I was so shocked at the state I was in when we had our greyhound PTS. I found the guilt unbearable for such a long time. I know it was the right thing to do but I found being responsible for ending her life a lot to shoulder.
