MOT Failure.. New car suggestions?

Hi guys,
The OHs car failed its mot today. Needs a fair bit of welding, couple of tyres.. usual things that go wrong with a ford..
So now we're between a rock and a hard place. Do we keep the little money pit which has a very reliable engine and gearbox (even though everything else drops to bits) or do we dispose of it and find something else?
OH says it needs to be another small car. Also we're not overly keen on cars with engines that are known for failing easily as with us, if it can, it will!
So, any suggestions for a bomb proof little car that is reliable and not too much trouble? - I know thats a big ask these days

You weigh up what's normal wear and tear (tyres) and what's a death knell. How much welding does it need/cost? If you pay a couple of hundred to get it another 12 months mot that's nothing compared to depreciation on a newer car. And better the devil you know etc.TrickyWicky wrote: »Hi guys,

Welding can be very cheap, just find check out a few of those farm workshops you see around. I got a brand new sill on a Mk3 Golf for £50 cash all in (£15 for the sill and £35 for the bloke to weld it). Cost almost as much for the Waxoyl to waterproof it afterwards.
In general I've always worked on the rule that a full years MOT is worth £360 onto the "value" of the car (£30 per month) - a couple of tyres should be less than £100, and depending what welding you need, that should be MUCH less than £100.0 -
I've had several old Renaults and Peugeots. Seems that if they get to 8 years old then they're pretty damn reliable. Cheap to run too.0
