certainly should have a code somewhere. Just be sure you are using the correct version. I just installed windows 7 ultimate upgrade as a fresh install and had a nightmare of a time - MS technical support were extremely unhelpful - their suggestion was: uninstall windows 7, then install windows xp, then reinstall windows 7 and see if that fixes your problem!!! I can't believe that that anyone could consider that nonscense - anyway if anyone does have that problem do pm as I now know a solution.
Why not? That is exactly what you have to do. When you install an upgrade version it checks for an installation of a previous OS so therefore you can't do an install off a bare drive. If you didn't want to have to do that you should have bought the retail version.
The only reason you have to go through that aggro is because you bought the upgrade version to save a few quid.0 -
One option for a clean install using an upgrade disc is a double install

Exactly the same happened to us last week.
I decided to reinstall the system on my Sony Vaio ............... as you do, and shouldn't! when the second disc failed with an error.
To cut a very long story short, we installed OHs Windows 7 disc on my PC, using the code conveniently stuck on the bottom of my laptop.
All went well, until yesterday a dramatic message from Microsoft appeared on my screen, asking me to validate license.
We phoned the number on the screen, and a very nice helpful robot digitally gave a series of numbers to input on the screen.
Result - all ended happily, until the next time ..............................!0
