Food Shopping Newbie!

Hi All, I'm a newbie to food shopping and I'm so worried about it.
How much am I looking to spend for 2 adults (1 male, 1 female?) What tips can you give me for saving?
I'm trying to save as much money as I can, as we have a new baby on the way (due in March - only recently found out though!) so times difficult at the moment.
Any advice on which store is the best, etc would be very much appreciated!

Aldi and Lidl for fruit and veg offers and Lidl for their "half-price weekend offers"
Reduced items late on in supermarkets, freeze as much as possible and build up a "stash".
Congratulations on future birth of your child, have a look at the coupons thread for coupons to be used on food, household goods, toiletries and baby stuff.

Another option
Set the search to 9 + then tick the shops nearby, leave branded unticked, tick any dietary and free from boxes which apply, enter a search item, click find it

So, cornflakes returns this

Asda smart price products are usually good, though the prices have jumped recently0 -
Home Bargains and B&M stores or any of those types of shops, especially for household goods and toiletries.

What about things like bread? Does it work out cheaper to make your own (like bread rolls) or should you just get them from the shops?
Will buying from the butcher and green grocer work out cheaper than supermarkets, do you think?0 -
It depends what bread you buy. It's a lot cheaper than branded, but not much cheaper than a value/basic loaf.
Pop over to the Old Style board for lots of ideas on cutting grocery costs. And here's a site that's run by one of the old stylers - it's targeted at families but should give you some ideas: http://www.cheap-family-recipes.org.uk/0 -
This is the cheapest online butcher I have seen so far, though delivery is £12:95 for orders under £50

You can look for offers here, usually half price or better, then buy one get one free, work out how many you use a week or month, check the use by date and then get as many as you can which will be used within the use by date.

One tip is to reduce the number of visits to any shops, so you do not pick up other items than the ones you went there for0 -
Hi Fredula
It was 30 years ago when I had a baby and I used terry nappies, but I do believe from what I have read on the boards that Lidl disposables are much cheaper and better than Pampers. I know that a new baby is expensive, but try all sorts of wipes etc, and forget the brands. This is the smart way to go.0 -
