Wet/dry cat food?

We were advised by our vet to put our cat on a wet food diet following urinary tract infection. Unfortunately he is like a mad thing on wet food, stealing the pouches out of the cupboard and chewing through them to get to the food, attacking me when I am about to feed him, attacking our other cat to get to her food, etc he is like a child who has had too many E numbers! I am
Not sure if he is behaving like this because he is hungrier and the wet food isn't filling him up as much as the dry food did or it is because of additives in wet food?
Also it is so much more expensive as we have had to put our other cat onto wet food too to make sure the other cat doesn't have any dry food!
Feeding time is a nightmare as he literally goes crazy for the good and is grabbing it out of my hands before I've even got to his bowl, growling and hissing at anyone who dares to stop him!
Any ideas?

Which wet food are you feeding? If it is something like Whiskas or Felix, it will contain lots of additives that might be contributory factors to his behaviour.

I would suggest that you feed something like Bozita. It is a great quality food, high meat content, no grains, reasonably priced from a website such as Zooplus. No additives. My 5 cats love it, even the one who is not really a wet food fan.

Also, have you thought about getting the food ready with the cats shut in a different room, and only letting them in when the food is in the bowls? Might save you a few scars ;)

If you're feeding two cats wet food, then I'd suggest switching to cans - they work out much cheaper. Butchers Classic is a decent food and can be found in most supermarkets.
  • I have a very similar problem. I have a cat who had cystitis last June. It was insanely stressful and expensive vet-wise as his problem was pretty chronic. Consequently, I transferred to feeding only wet (felix cans), and as you say if you change the diet for one you are realistically forced to feed them all the same. All three cats ate much more and it became more expensive. It doesn't appear that the wet is as satisfying as the dry food, it does lead me to question what really I'm feeding my cats, if I knew of a realistic affordable alternative I would alter their diet.

As above - there is good and bad quality wet food. If you had a kid and was feeding it McDOnalds all the time, the kid would be hyper on those E numbers. The same with cats and whiskas/felix and the likes.

Without knowing what do you feed your cat, difficult to say.

Bozita is a very good wet food - it is on sale at ASDA called `toplife'.

Ordinary supermarket pet food often contains all manner of additives, colours etc: this is to bulk the food out for maximum profit whilst ensuring the animals enjoy eating it (despite the ingredients) - & I discovered that these can alter temperament as well as coat condition.

However please note that most cats prefer wet food to dried - I can't say I blame them for that. So can get `excited' with the prospect of getting it!

I had to change my cats food when my Tom had urinary problems - I still feed 50% dried (Burns) however. I buy all my food online from Zooplus - mainly I feed Smilla, or Animonda Carni - only buying Bozita (tetra packs) when they are on special offer. I found feeding Burns (dried) was very good for temperament & condition of cats but as I was forced to feed wet trial these other foods (having abandoned felix before switching to Burns & then re-introducing wet food).

Note: if you plan ahead & buy cans in bulk it is actually cheaper to feed the above foods (I also get litter online & top up locally from Liddles and Aldi & ocassionally PAH when they have special offers) than things such as Felix & Go-cat & your pets will be far healthier on it.

    cats love wet food
i have dry food out all the time so they graze on that and feed my 2 cats half a pouch of wet food each. morning and night they love the gravy ones and do get very excited when its food time.
