National Express open return from airport - yay or nay?

Our return flight lands at Heathrow at 06:25. If I book a cheaper Apex return with National Express, I'll need to guestimate how long it'll take to get our luggage, clear Passport Control & Customs etc and how delayed our flight might conceivably be. But if I book a more expensive open return, I'll need to prebook seats by calling National Express. I haven't travelled with them for years. Are their coaches, particularly from airports, generally very busy? What are my chances of calling to book seats as soon as we're off the plane and being able to get on a coach within a couple of hours? (Direct coaches run approximately every 2 hours.)

I thought with NE you could just pay the driver when you got on the bus to be honest.

Might be worth ringing them.
