Credit cards and travelling!

Hello and thank you for your time.

I am going traveling soon to Australia and possibly else where around the region.

I have decided that I would like a credit card for security or emergencies.

What would be the best credit cards?

I was looking at ones that would actually benefit me such as cash back or airmiles as I will be buying flights soon.

Also since we're on the topic of cards and traveling I am with Natwest and was wondering how I could avoid ATM charges made to my debit card? If possible.

My view is Metrobank if you can get to London to open the account with a pre-paid (internet loadable) back-up. NOT NAT WEST

Most people suggest the Halifax Clarity credit card but they are not straight-forward to get, as I (and many others) have had our applications rejected despite having what looks like good credit records. The card charges 0% commission, 0% loading and cheap cash withdrawals and is by far the best card for ease-of-use spending abroad. I am a bit sad that I can't (currently) get one.

As for cashback, I have a grandfathered Egg Money card (now provided by Barclaycard) that provides 1% cashback. Capital One still offers a cashback card here.

Also note that if you spend more than 3,333.33...GBP per year, the American Express platinum cashback card gives you the best cashback compared to all on-the-market cashback cards at the moment.

hi there, i too am off to oz, (next month) i was in my local thomas cook store getting some dollars when the super helpful woman at the bureau de change mentioned about this card they do, that you load up with cash here & use while out there. its a mastercard so you can use in 99% of places there. there is a charge for drawing cash at an atm though. that said i dont think any card other than you having an australian bank account card would be free cash withdrawals from atm's. hope this helps!!

Norwich and Peterborough is free.
Metro Bank is free.
Halifax Clarity is close to free if you pay it off with a faster payment as soon as it appears online.
