Hi all, I was hoping someone could help me out.
I bought 2gb (2x1gb) memory to upgrade my ram as currently pc only has 256mb :embarasse . My problem is that windows will not load with either stick of memory (tried using with current memory as well) although they are showing up in the bios screen. The pc keeps crashing and rebooting, I just don't know what to do now.
Should I just bin it and buy more or is there a way to tweak the bios to let windows load up?
One last thing (I do love to ramble on ) my anti-static wrist strap got chewed up by my toddler. Where is the best, most reasonably priced place to get a new one?

Thanks in advance for any advice,
Gail.

Is it the correct memory for the PC, and did you check that the PC can handle 2GB?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

Is it definitely the correct RAM for your system? How far does the computer boot up? What operating system do you use? Are you saying that it won't load up with the old memory in now either? Is the BIOS correctly identifying the the new memory?

            ok few issues here.
Have you brought the right memory for the motherboard ( DDR, SIM, Dim, DDR2)
Does it run at the right speed? ( remember memory is backwards compatible not forward ( i mean 400mhz mem will run at 266mhz, but 266mhz will not run at 400mhz )
Also check that your motherboard will support the memory. Whats the motherboard maximum? We need a Motherboard Name or something.
PC world make the biggest mistake ever, saying, you need more memory. They NEVER EVER look into your system properly and say, well you cannot run this, you cannot run that, they must say you NEED this.
You have to tread carefullyIf at first you don't succeed. Remove all evidence that you have tried

I suggest you use the Crucial system scanner here as this will tell you exactly what type of memory you can have in your computer."He's a maniac, maniac that's for sure,
He will kill your cat and nail him to the door"

Not a computer expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I did fall foul of buying some extra memory that turned out to be ECC registerd type memory. This was not compatible with my machine and the bios could not be altered to accept it.
I think the way to tell the difference is that unbuffered has equal number of chips and registered ECC has an unequal number
HERE is a link that shows some pictures and info (Way above my head)0

Is it still crashing if you go back to just the origional ram stick?0

could someone give me a little more info regarding adding more memory. ive just bought a new system which has 1gb of memory (aeneon ddr2 pc5300 2x 512mb) the supplier wanted £114 for another 1gb, which is double what aeneon will charge. my question is, can i mix and match memory suppliers, will pc5300 work alongside pc5400, and could i add 2x 1gb chips to the existing 512mb chips.
 thanks guysMortgage £242500 on completion
 FD CC 11/2014 £5900 (£3900 after BT)
 FD loan Approx £5700
 Deeply depressing total - £2541000

As long as it's the right type of memory (see the Crucial memory scanner posted above) then you can mix and match memory makes and speeds. However, the speed is always limited to the speed of the slower memory stick, so you might want to save yourself a bit of cash by not getting the fastest memory around, or upgrade both sticks.
As for the OP, make sure it's the right type of memory. If at the end of the day, you bought the wrong memory, don't bin it, but resell it either on Ebay or somewhere like Computer Exchange where you can get good prices for your memory. http://www.cex.co.uk/0
