Insure an old laptop.

I've been looking at insuring my late 2008 macbook (the first aluminium ones) Looking at a lot of gadget insurers they all say it needs to be purchased within 12 months.

I'm a student, so I've also been considering contents insurance. With barclays student insurance I can add computer insurance and it dosen't seem to say anything about the age of the computer. Could I Insure it this way, and would I value it at the price of the closest replacement?

Does anyone have any other suggestions for insuring it?

You could get contents cover and add it to that, But its 3 - 4 years old so the payout maybe less than your policy excess.

My sister found that out, The laptop got knocked off a stool by the dog. They said it was a budget laptop despite it
    costing over £400.

All she got at the end after many calls was £150 towards a new laptop. After the excess was taken away. But her premium
has risen considerably and they will have that back in 2 years.

    Not really worth it.

The advantage of it being an MBP is the fact there is no budget model and so if it is total lossed even if it is old you're going to get a decent machine in replacement. You can certainly reject a Windows based machine as it is not the same thing and will not run all your software etc which only works under Apple OS X.

Stand alone laptop insurance tends also to be a warranty (ie breakdown) which is not covered by contents insurance and hence the difference of why a home insurance policy you can insure it whatever age but a standalone policy they want it below a certain age.

If you are not a mature student then you should also check your parents home insurance as some offer cover to childrens possessions whilst they are away at uni as standard.
