in Credit cards
I'm not sure if I've just been an idiot... or is someone asking for information that they shouldn't ??
I contacted Barclaycard's Indian call centre on 0800 917 7277, I typed in my credit card number as normal, went through the options to speak to someone (option 6). When I got through to someone she asked for my full card number, as I had never been asked this before I told her that I have already typed it in and I'm not giving it out again. We talked for about 5 mins discussing my problems and then she asked for my barclaycard expiry date, this question had no reference to anything we were talking about and I'm not sure why but I told her the answer, I was then asked for the 3 digit security number on the back of my card and again didn't think anything of it and told her. After receiving this information I was put on hold then after a minute I was taken off hold and told she couldn't help and said I should call back tomorrow. This was okay as it was reference to a direct debit that wouldn't take place until the following day.
My concern is that the woman asked for my card number, then asked for my expiry date and then the 3 digit security code... surely this shouldn't be needed for anything unless I was making a purchase???
Anyone else's thoughts?
Thanks

Noone should have that number bar you and a merchant to pay online.
I'd be very wary of it. I've never been asked and have no idea of the relevance to a direct debit0 -
It is one way to verify that the person on the phone actually has the card and isnt some scammer with a statement. If you are worried just call Barclaycard again and tell them your concern0

A lot of issuers ask for expiry date and CVV to confirm that it is YOU talking, i.e. have the card. Just additional security
They will type the data into a screen and a response will be checked if correct or not. The user is not usually able to see the CVV.
I would not worry about it; if you have called the right number (which looking at the number given is BC) then you will be ok. Unless of course fraudsters have been able to move the telephone number to themselves which is unlikely.0 -
Thanks for your replies.
I called them and discussed my concern and apparently they're normal security questions. I just thought it was odd as every other security question is normally something you couldn't do anything with...
Last 3 digits of phone number
Last 3 digits of direct debit bank account number
... can't really do much with the above0 -
Have to admit I've never been asked for it and would never give for all the above reason0
