Advice on cost of car service

Hello, thank you for reading and I hope you can help.

I wanted to find out the what is reasonable charge for an annual service?
I have a VW golf 1.6 engine petrol 10 years old.

I have it serviced regularly since I bought it 3 years ago but feel that my usual garage has been overcharging.

I've rung around locally and been quoted between £200-270 + vat. does this sound reasonable?

Depends what they are doing for that price.

changing the oil - no it doesn't.

Doing plugs, all filters etc - getting closer.

Need a bit more info really....

I asked for a full service, included changing all filters, spark plugs, checking brakes, suspension, oil filter...

I do trust the work done by my regular place - just wondering if they are just a bit expensive. Last year was charged 330 for service and MOT ex vat. £90 of that was for the MOT which I believed is overprice. From what I've read on the MSE guide it shouldn't be any more than £54.

catch 22, your paying for a service you are happy with, whilst you may find it cheaper else where you may not receive the service you want or expect. You have asked for things to be checked aswell so that will obviously cost more, when comparing have you included that service is included in your price comparisons??

As for your MOT being charged at £90 what did that include?? That isn't just for the test so obviously something needed to be repaired/replaced for the MOT to pass which may not have been picked up on the service/inspection if they did indeed to do a pre MOT.

If your 200 plus vat quote included all usual filters and fluids plus plugs, transmission fluid change, fuel filter, coolant and or brake fluid change it sounds fair, otherwise I would look at taking it somewhere else for a ten year old golf with what is a pretty strong engine generally, however if you trust them then an extra 70 quid or so may be a small price to pay in the long run
