The best suggestion I can make is use passatta instead of tinned tomatoes, you get that richness to the sauce like the jar ones then! I like dolmio (but refuse to eat ready made stuff these days!), hate bolognese made with tinned tomatoes, but love it made with passatta

When I'm trying to make taste-alikes, I use the ingredients list on the back of the *brand name* packets/jars for a fair idea of what to put in (obviously excluding the miscellaneous additives and preservatives) and remember that more often than not, the ingredients are listed in order of quantity/volume, sometimes with % so if you're good at maths it should be a doddle!

If you don't have the original jars, the main shopping websites usually have a product info/ingredients section with the list.

    HTH :)

Just checked the Dolmio website for the list (this link will take you to the Bolognese products), they actually have the list of ingredients and hopefully you can figure out the proportions for the sauce you want :)

Absence is as important as abundance.
  • instead of adding sugar try adding (start with a tbsp or 2 and adjust to your taste) sweet chilli sauce to it (the sweet chilli dipping sauce is ok, or i use the cheapest big bottles of sweet chilli sauce from the chinese supermarket), along with a teaspoon of cinnamon - i find this adds a lovely sweetness and depth and warmth to the bol, especially if you go on to make a chilli with the left over bol sauce like i do :)

I use passatta too, a lot cheaper for a lot more and no added nasties, then I add herbs/tom paste/onion/crushed garlic/mushrooms for bolognaise or salsa for spicy - yummo!!
