some rent back during work to house?

Hi -

we recently left a property that we had been renting for 5 years. We had a good relationship with the landlord. The ceiling collapsed in the main bedroom 6 months before we left. If there had been anybody in the bed they would have been seriously injured. We had spoken to the landlord before it collapsed about the crack and they had come to see it and were arranging for the ceiling to be replaced.
We had to move ALL of our furniture (which was by now covered in plaster dust) by ourselves into our daughters bedroom (which you couldn't move in wil all the stuff in there so this room was unusable also) and we had to sleep downstairs for two weeks while the work was done. They didn't seal the doors when pulling down the remaining plaster and it gor everywhere upstairs....

Should we have got some of our rent back for this? We had one bedroom for two weeks instead of three.....

thanks for any help!

I think you should have asked for the landlord to pay for the stuff to be cleaned, and to compensate you for loss of use of half of the house for the fortnight involved.

Asking for these things now is a bit late but it can't do any harm asking.
  • Thats what we thought! Just wanted to get some different opinions about it....
    Thanks
