  • I have a Samsung n145 which is great for what you say you want to use it for.

I got mine from Asda in May of last year and it has worked like a dream since then.
  • suggest you get a netbook with a dual core processor as they are frustratingly slow otherwise. saw one online the other day for 199. but she needs to try out different ones in a store before choosing which one she likes as the feel of the keyboard, trackpad buttons etc can make a real difference to how good or infuriating it is.
eg, i got a dell 1012 whcih is good spec and I like the keyboard, but the trackpad buttons are not separate from the trackpad itself, so when you try to click them the pointer jumps randomly across the screen, all the time. just so annoying.
    hope this helps

I bought an Asus 1011PX just before Christmas. Dual core processor, 320Gb HD, battery life of well over 8 hours, excellent keyboard, no problems connecting to internet, youtube etc. £229 at Currys/PC World at the moment, but might be available elsewhere for a bit less...

They are all much the same to be honest. I would advise that it has at least 2GB of RAM and as already mentioned has a dual core processor. I think the dual core processors are all n4** Intel Atom chips. Also look for anything with a 6 or 9 cell battery, rather than 3cell. Your looking at about 2.5, 4.5, 7.5 hours of running, all will vary though.

Just as an addition, try and find one that isn't Windows 7 starter. It's severely limited, couldn't even change the desktop image on mine -.- It's con of an OS really!

Thing is, most netbooks really aren't up for heavy tasks. ie they aren't a laptop! But pre-empt it with decent dual core processor, and good memory, and it helps a big bunch.

It's a shame they are still so dear, but what'd help most netbooks would be an SSD in them, but that raises costs to silly prices for a netbook. Basic use and they're fine though.
