Mainly living alone, expensive area, 1 shelf of freezer space. While I’m living on my own and making the effort to bring in lunch from home, about £15/week and there’d be room to cut that down further if I was willing to sacrifice the fresh veg. I do that by:

    -Being veggie.
    -Cooking and baking from scratch
-Buying only things I'll definitely use before they go off
-I've got a Lidl if I do a small detour from work, so I use that for my veg, and once in a while make a trip to the nearest Asian supermarket for rice, lentils and spices.
-Basing meals around what needs using up next
-Milk, coffee and some fruit are available for free at work so I eat breakfast there (as a lot of us in my workplace do).

A typical day's food for me would be porridge made with the free milk for breakfast, last night's leftovers for lunch, veg curry or tajine in the evening. Perhaps a bit of apple pie or something if I've made some. I don't really do snacks and I only usually drink water at home.

While my boyfriend’s staying though, it all goes to hell. Doesn’t like this, wants takeaway, doesn’t feel like eating that tonight and worst of all, wants a bag of crisps, no leftovers left for lunch no matter how much I cook,:rotfl:. Still, I don’t mind because he ends up doing a lot of the shopping.
    Saving for deposit: Finished! :j
    House buying: Finished!
Next task: Lots and lots of DIY

We spend about £40/50 ish per week for 2+ cat. If I needed to I could cut the bill but i have noticed if i am too mean with my shopping i end up buying more treats/takeaways during the week and spending a lot more. I have pretty much cut out the takeaways as they are so expensive, would much rather buy steak from m&s for the same price. We only have a tiny freezer so just freeze fresh meat and take out what we need daily.

I thought I was spending about £100 a month on food, but it looks like more around the £180 figure. WHAT A WASTE! :o

I spend <£50pm on super/market food. (Currenly spending a great deal less in my efforts to run my freezer and food cupboards down). However I eat out 2-3 evenings a week and these costs mount up.

  • There are 3 of us in the household and 2 cats. We spend approx £120 per month, so that's about £10 per week. But we have the advantage of a freezer, the only thing I can suggest is making a budget for yourself each day and sticking to it (if you have to buy fresh every day).
  • Currently my budget is about £55 per week (£220 per month). There are 4 of us - all adults. I think we eat really well for that. We have a very varied diet. I dont meal plan because we often buy whoopsies and develop ideas around them. By NEVER eating out or having take aways and taking advantage of offers and places such as Approved Foods we are able to include some bottles of wine/beer and more than enough chocolate treats! We are fortunate to have plenty of storage space-2 freezers and a larder as well as a large kitchen.
I personally think when living alone it is more difficult than simply dividing that by 4 because its not always possible to take advantage of bulk buys or store so much. When my "children" were at university they budgeted for around £15 per week each. One ate really well but the other who hated cooking came home rather skinny at the end of each term!
