I have recently started doing a simialr thing. My salary goes into my main account where all my dds come out of. I "pay" myself a set amount which goes into another current account which I use for shopping and day to day expenses. Any left over in the main account at the EOM is either saved or paid off a debt. It seems to be working well so far.

Why don't people just leave money in their account and only spend what they can? I have about £600 of DDs coming out of my account from the 1st to the 31st, but I just spend what I know I can and the rest sits in the account to pay DDs and also gains interest. I used to have 2 accounts, but now my 2nd account is just for loan repayments. Main account is for spending, DDs etc.
  • I phoned all the companies I have direct debits with today and changed the date they come out of my account so they all come out on the first. I did this because I just got a new job and will be paid at the end of every month. They all changed the date no problem, except my mobile company (3) but I wasn't surprised because nothing is ever simple with them! They managed to change it to the 5th of the month, so that will have to do.

I think it'll help me be more organised as I'm always being caught out by money disappearing unexpectedly but now I'll know whatever is there at the start of the month is mine.

  • I've got 2 accounts a DD account where my pay gets paid into and a spend account where all my tax credits, child benefit and child support money goes into. All my DD's come out on the 1st of the month. I'm not very organised so found this to be the best way to ensure everything gets paid.
