help with insurance claim
hi, my car was wrote off in a hit and run on new years eve so have unfortunately had to claim off my insurance. the car was taken away and now today they have confirmed its a cat c write off. im completely devastated because i really loved that car, it was so reliable and i've hardly had any problems with it.
i've never had to do this before so where do i go from here?
its an 04 ford focus 1.6 ghia in metallic black with 66,000 on the clock and full service history.
At first they offered £2,050 which i said was not enough and then they said that if i send in the service history that they may be able to give me £2,400. which i still think is a bit too low as from looking at auto trader, ebay etc cars of the same spec with same miles are at least £2,600- over £3,000. how do i go about trying to get what i think its worth.
I could do without it going on too long as im currently without a car, there coming for courtesy car tomorrow and i have 2 young children and i work til late at night so i need a new one desperatly which i cant afford til i get the cheque.
many thanks for any help x

Cars in the autotrader are the sellers dream prices... Not the actual selling price.
Nothing to match your car exactly but several 2004 1.6's, LX, Zetec etc sold on ebay for £1500
Plenty up for £3000 but not sold.
Parkers price guide £1500 - £2600 £2600 is a franchised dealer. Always makes me wonder how many franchised
dealers sell 7 year old cars? Mostly 3 years or less unless something special comes in then maybe upto 5 years for
a 1 owner garaged except for the service's and MOTs each year gleaming like new type cars.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
As you've already done - find some prices from dealers not private sellers of similar spec cars etc. Send those off as examples to the insurer. Looks like £2600 is the best you could really hope for though.
I assume you are going through MIB too if the accident wasn't your fault?

I was hoping that i would get at least £2,600. the car was immaculate, full main dealer service history, only 2 owners, electric sunroof, panther black metallic paint. i cant find anything to touch it at all for anywhere near that price
and most that i have found are silver and im not very keen on silver.
What is the MIB? the police are refusing to help wihout a number plate even though im pretty sure that with a description of the car and the time from a witness they could find the car from the cctv camera on the junction 100 yds up the road. Also it is evident that the driver must have been drunk as they went right onto the opposite side of the road to crash into my car before driving off, its lucky it was midnight and no one was coming other way as they could have been killed as its a really busy road.
the insurance havent been particularly helpful either, they just said i had to take the hit on my insurance and havent really helped much either.
I've only had one other claim years ago which was starightforward and my car was mended so im totally confused now.
Some people are telling me i should accept the £2,400 and others are saying i should go for more. And how can i claim through the MIB?0 -
just had a look, dont think i can claim from the MIB as i was not in the vehicle at the time so no personal injury involved.0

As forgotmyname mentioned, prices from autotrader and dealers are regarded as the price the seller wants to start negotiating from.
"We do not usually find advertisements for similar vehicles very persuasive. A vehicle may often be sold for less than the advertised price. And small differences in mileage, year of registration, model type etc - can significantly affect the value." from the Insurance Ombudsman
