London Marathon Hint's and tip's?

Hi, My husbands running in the London Marathon on April 22nd and we were planning to take the kids and have a little break over the 21st/22nd/23rd - Does anyone have experience of the marathon, any advise on where to stay, things to do, etc? I've checked out the nearby hotels but they are all so expensive especially the 21st! Is it worth staying further out?
Thanks in advance for any help!

  • You can stay further out for sure - but then factor in the cost & time of getting to the start line for him as transport will be rammed most of the day...

Probably get somewhere in Bayswater at a reasonable price but again getting to the start will be hassle.

  • Where have you looked for hotels - near the start or the finish?

As you'll want somewhere that works for you throughout your trip I'd avoid somewhere outside the centre of town or Greenwich, the start, as you and especially the kids will get fed up with messing about.

Have you looked at the hotels around Bloomsbury? There are many between Russell Sq tube and Euston - maybe take the bus to Waterloo East or tube (from Euston) to London Bridge, then train to Greenwich or Blackheath for the start.

Or the Travelodge between Southwark tube and London Bdg.

It might be worth considering moving hotels and staying at one outside of London for the 21st in particular and then look at hotels for the remaining nights. A lot of people book hotel rooms almost a year in advance for the London Marathon so you will find it harder to get a reasonable priced family room hotel.

if you try superbreak.co.uk, the way their hotel contracts works sometimes means you can get a room there at a reasonable rate, but there will be very limited availability. I had a look and while not focusing in on any particular hotel, I thuoght the rates per person for a three night stay were reasonable enough given the event in the city.
