Half price online child protection software as seen in The Mail

Hi all
Saw this piece in the Daily Mail today on software I bought a while ago

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=434453&in_page_id=1770

developed with Sara Payne, works well and even has free online help in downloading it (I needed it)

I used a code to buy it for half price (£9.99 instead of £19.99) and thought I should share with fellow moneysavers

This article had me in stitches!

"The secret language children use in online chatrooms was unveiled yesterday to help parents trap paedophiles." - I mean, really, are the Daily Mail claiming they've uncovered some great conspiracy? These acronyms are hardly a secret, I can't see how they can have been 'suddenly revealed', and it doesn't exactly take a genius to figure out that pron = !!!!!!. Half of the acronyms sound like something straight out of Brasseye. :rotfl:

The software itself doesn't sound all that useful - how is saying 'brb' (be right back) to a friend on MSN Messenger indicate a paedophile danger? And besides, kids will quickly figure out what phrases are on the blacklist and just invent new ones. I wouldn't waste your money on it.
  • Hi there Darksun
I definitely agree with you that the Mail did go a bit doolally (they do tend to go extreme on things), but the principle is good which is just to be careful of who your children speak to online just as you would in real life. You wouldn't let your kids wander off in apark and speak to total strangers so it's just being a bit careful with them when they are online.

I use MSN and am shocked at the amount of people who approach me to 'talk' and I once accidentally clicked on yes rather than block and mmy eyes were opened! ;-) Fine for me as an adult but I have talkd to my kids about what is appropriate. ILP doens't just monitor MSN, but everything they do onlines o I can see what sites they visited etc and make sure thye're ok or block them if they'r enot.

For example my daughter went to what she thought was a groovychicks website and it was not that sort of groovy chick! So I was able to see exactly what website it was (as she couldn't remember) and we blocked it together so she won't find it again. I hope by using something like ILP it just gives me a bit more peace of mind.

    Safe surfing....

I really don't think this kind of nanny software is all that effective (just my opinion, which is a weak one because I don't have children) if children really want to get around it and there can be so many false positives making it restrictive. I think a more effective way of keeping your child safe is to let them only use an internet connected pc in a family room, eg living room etc. You don't have to constantly invade their privacy by looking over their shoulder but at least you can keep an eye on them and where they are visiting, they will less likely visit somewhere that they know isn't appropriate. I think meercat71 you have a very good relationship with your children and that's what's really needed in discussing what is appropriate and making your children forewarned.

What do you have set in the privacy tab of the options? If you tick "Only people on my allow list can see when I'm online and send me messages" you shouldn't get strangers sending you messages.

Oh, and I agree with Supescraper. my kids aren't old enough for MSN yet but hey use the net a lot and we jut monitor what they're doing. I don't like the idea of software that shuts down the PC if they type a certain word into MSN, it's not going to build up much trust us it?

I'm upgrading to Vista in a couple f weeks and I'm looking forward to some trying of the new Parental controls in that. They sound pretty good.

And feel I want to die
