What the "old hands" are trying to say is that we don't yet know "the amount of gas". We know what it is costing you, but that is not necessarily the same.

To identify any error, it is essential to find and monitor the consumption screen. Help finding the consumption screen is the specific thing you should "put your foot down" about when you next phone British Gas.

Ditto my last post. I am not going to repeat myself a third time. I know you are both trying to help me and I am very grateful but you are having a go at me because I have not provided you with the right information, and the reason being I am waiting for somebody to tell me which screen I'm looking for. There are about 20+ on the meter.

Ok, to get the reading on the meter you are looking for the screen that says 'Meter Index'.
To get to this screen, press the red A button (not hold it this time).
It should cycle through three screens (For Gas > Owed > Meter Index > For Gas).
Keep a diary with top ups, the credit for gas & the meter Index. This will allow you to see how many m3 you are using (to convert to kWh multiply by 11.2), and how much it is costing you.

Once you have this put it up here and we'll be able to see what is going on.

Not me (though IMO the other one was a bit sharp:(). I'm sorry you have taken it that way. You posted yesterday that you intended to phone British Gas again and "put your foot down". I posted this morning that "help finding the consumption screen" was the specific issue you needed to enquire of British Gas. That was all that was needed.

Hopefully SwanJon's post has made sense, but it's up to whether you engage with the help freely offered.

Hi munkee2 Just to let you know I have lived in my house for years and still managed to get a debt put on my meter that didn't belong to me. A mix up with account numbers I was told. It took me ages to get it sorted out so for your own peace of mind I would just check. I check my meter every time I top it up now just to make sure there is no debt on it.

I give up. I have asked at least twice how to give you that information. IF I KNEW HOW TO DO IT I WOULD HAVE DONE IT!

Is this page on the British Gas website any help?

Thank you very much. By pressing the red button, but not holding it, I only get two screens: the amount of credit remaining and the amount owing (£0.00). I have gone through the whole cycle after holding the red button in and cannot find one saying 'meter index' there either.

I've taken readings from all af the accessible screens and will post a few of them - I have no idea whether they will be of any use to you but I don't know what they mean.

    09. Tariff cost 4 - 8.748
    10. Tariff cost 5 - 4.029
    16. C.V - 40.900
    23. GAR 30%
    24. GD rec rate 0%
    25. GD week min - £0.00
    26. GD week max - £0.00
    27. GD week remaining - £0.00
    28. NGD rec rate 0%
    29. NGD week min - 0.00
    30. NGD week max - 0.00

I doubt that helps you... but again, thank you so much for all help and advice thus far.

Sorry, that's my fault for making an assumption. The older models have the meter reading (index) on a different part of the meter.
Sleepless & Offpeak have put this link up before:
    https://www.britishgas.co.uk/HelpAndAdvice/LookUp/?SXI=8,CASE=3676
It sounds like your meter is closer to to the top one (the block on the front can be grey or beige).
If it is neither on this page, then it will probably be this type
    http://www.uswitch.com/cmsimages/gas-electricity/gas-prepayment-meterimage.jpg
in which case the reading is in the top window.

In either case the numbers surronded in red are decimal places and, while it can be helpful to note them down, they don't form a part of your 'read'

From what you posted, we can see the Tier 1 (scree 09) & tier 2 (10) price - which looks right.
The calorific value (16) - the energy content of the gas (turns volume to energy)
and that you have no debt on the meter (24-30)

As an aside, where have they dreamed up that CV from. There is nowhere in UK that has had a CV above 40.1 for the past couple of months. Something else to query with them.

Swanjon, my meter is closer to the one on the second link you gave on the Uswitch website. How does that help you with the 'meter index' reading. Are you just requesting a standard meter readong?

Molerat, I will mention the CV reading to them. Thanks for pointing that out.

Yes, the standard meter reading is what is being requested. ;)
