  • I normally manage to keep my meat consumption to 100g daily plus one egg.
I could very happily live on meat and eggs (and sugar)
Katiecoodle. Unlike your sensible son, I'd have been drooling watching the hog roast.

I don't serve up meat at every meal but try to keep it to one meal per day max. We have fish at least once per week so thar leaves me with six meat based meals a week. For one typical week I'd buy one decent sized chicken or roasting joint, a pound of mince or stewing meat, four pork chops and some bacon as the meat "ration". That's for four of us...two adults, and two older kids. The chicken will do three meals.....a roast dinner, curry or sweet and sour and a stir fry. The mince will make bolognaise or chilli or plain old mince with tatties, or we'll have a stew, the chops get grilled with some sort of sauce, the bacon gets put in a pasta bake or sauce.

The rest of the time we eat egg or cheese based meals, or I use milk or yoghurt for the protein element. Folk forget that milk counts as an animal protein source, I think. Lentils or beans plus a carbohydrate like bread or rice is as good a protein combo as meat.

It's the balance of nutrients over the day or even a week that's important, remember, also that we only need 2-3 ounces in total of pure complete protein per day. 4oz of red meat or chicken will give you that and is fine per day for an adult, you don't need any more than that unless you're a body builder or still growing child. The excess is just treated as a fuel food and you might as well eat something a bit cheaper for that.

Nowadays, I try and stretch meat out with extra veggies, lentils and soya mince (I seem to have acquired a large stock of it from my mum). Dh has no idea but we probably eat around half the meat we ate a year ago. It definitely helps lower the cost of many meals.

We have meat or fish based meals approx 4 nights a week, We dont have meals that are purposefully vegetarian but just what we enjoy, these include egg and chips, jacket pots cheese and beans (the kids favourite) and for some reason I always make veggie and bean chillicon carne, never with beef mince.

Probably far too much, we've started meal planning so next week we have at least 3 veggie dinners and the wek after 4 :0) I like fish but always lack inspiration so trying to have that once a week, alongside getting our 5 a day each day and plenty of water too!

We probably have meat 3/4 times a week on average. We have a "soup" night, normally veg based but sometimes a meat stock based, a "on toast night" where eggs or beans form the main, we enjoy vegetable stews, pasta bakes, veggi burgers/nut roasts and tend to only have meat in the form of a roasted joint/bird (with the usual leftover meals) or beef steak that I use for pies/chilli/stews.

DH has a severe shellfish and seafood allergy so we cant eat fish as a family but I try to make sure DDs and I have fish a couple of times a month (the cross contamination risks are so great though that sometimes its more hassle than its worth).

Sometimes we might go a week or two without meat depending on what's in season/what we feel like eating. At the moment we're very much enjoying roasted veg risottos, vegetable tarts and nut roasts which have so much more flavour than a boring old lump of meat.

    On average we have meat 5 days a week(main meals)..5 meat days,1 fish day (salmon,or frozen fish fillets)and 1 "veggie" day(not totaly vegetarian,as i will use chedder etc)macaroni cheese,pasta bake,cauliflower/potato/chickpea,curry...
I want to reduce our meat intake, but increase our fish intake(but basicaly any financial savings from the meat will be lost on the fish as i think fish is much more expensive than meat!)
Ive already got the River cottage Veg book..adapting a butternut squash recipe from that to go with salmon tomorrow...and im waiting on delivery of the Meat Free Monday cookbook from the book people(only £4.99 there).

We eat lean meat every day. Not a huge portion each but meat nonetheless. Once a week i serve fish (which doesnt go down well with our son).

Weekends the hubby and son have bacon and eggs too (usually on a sandwich).
