Hi,
I'm relatively new to the old style boards and still learning. I've signed up to the grocery challenge and looking to find ways of trimming down the costs. So,
I was wondering, how much meat do you eat on a weekly basis? I have to admit that we tend to use quite a lot, with most of our meals being meat based. I just don't know what sort of thing to do without meat that will be a) filling as DH eats quite a bit
and b) that our 3 year old will happily eat, she is a real carnivore and as good as she is with veg/ trying new things I don't want to put her off with completely different things to her norm.

We eat a lot of chicken and fish. A big chicken will make us several meals and so works out good value. Up to Christmas ate a lot of pork as it was very reasonably priced. We have mince beef most weeks as well as I usually do a large chilly or cottage pie which does two nights. We hardly ever have lamb or steak these days unless its woopsied, its just soo expensive:eek:Started Self Managed DMP 10th May 2017.

I'm veggie, and DH is a huge carnivore, but he is happy to eat veggie meals quite often.
In the last few weeks he has had my pototo and bean salad with a single pork chop, two nights of just the salad on it's own. Several nights of roasted tomato's with spaghetti, a veggie shepards pie, then the pie again but with a bit of mince in it.
Sure I made him a steak at some point....
In other words, not a lot. I remember a time last year, maybe before that, when I would cook him meat every night. By me gaining more experience in my vegetarian cooking, it's cut down on the meat he eats
xCan't think of anything smart to put here...0 -
We eat it most nights tbh. We grow chickens, ducks, pigs and occasional turkeys and we swap our meat with our neighbouring farmer with his lamb & mutton.
So for us, meat is free and our freezers are always overflowing with it. The only meat I buy is beef to use in the slow cooker as a stew cos it's my favourite stew meat.
If you want more veggie meals why not plan a Meat Free Monday or similar every week and hunt through some vegetarian recipe blogs or sites?
Your 3 year old will happily eat whatever you're eating, esp if you start introducing new meals now.Jan '12 GC; £74.66/£100£2 saver club member #1070 -
More than I would like I think - just need to explore more veggie options this year. At the moment our veggie meals tend to just be pasta based.
I do try and stretch the meat we buy, we used to put two chicken breasts in a stirfry, now I just use one and bulk out with more veg/noodles, as well as the MSE way of bulking out mince with lentils! So we still have it 5/6 nights a week, but less of it.February Grocery Challenge - £100.87/£180February Don't Throw Food Away Challenge - £0.60/£1.500 -
We have weeks when we seem to eat meat at every meal, and then have weeks when we seem to eat very little meat. We like to buy meat from our local farm shop, and it's wonderful stuff, but fairly expensive, so we've learned to eat less of it each meal, so it lasts longer. Oddly, we've stopped noticing that we're having less each time. The exception was Christmas when I must admit that my husband, who does all the cooking, went a touch overboard with the ordering! (lovely grub, though!)0

I only cook for me, and have never been a big meat eater by nature but have made a more concentrated effort lately as doctor said was slightly anaemic (though I blame the meds was on..) even still I reckon I eat meat only around 4 times per week on a normal basis. Much prefer fish or veggie meals.
If I do cook with meat I tend to bulk things out like making pilafs and pasta dishes to stretch it further.I love food, hate waste and have a penchant for sparkly things ::D

Almost never now as it is too expensive for the quality of meat I would be happy to eat. We also get a veg box delivered so I eat mainly vegetarian food nowTaking responsibility one penny at a time!0

I don't eat meat at all, haven't for about 30 years. I hate the way they farm it, and meat free is better for my health. If you are going to eat meat I suggest you only buy organic sourced from a local farm. It is expensive so eat less of it. A lot of meat these days comes from all around the world, not good.

Like Zepsgal my OH still eats meat but I have been a vegetarian since i was 14 and all the kids have basically been brought up pescatarians (though they only really have fish once a week otherwise they have a vegetarian diet). Whilst my OH loves hs meat, especially chicken and steak he tends to eat a mainly veggie diet at home, he buys pre packed pies/burgers for when we have those and always has bacon & ham in the fridge/freezer but he is more than happy to eat whatever im cooking. If he has a real craving then he picks something up at the restaurant he works at.Success means having to worry about every thing in the world......EXCEPT MONEY. Johnny Cash
