Motor Insurance- Young Driver

My son is nearly 20, a householder, full time employed and a parent of a young baby, he and his fiancee are both responsible young people, and he is looking round for a reasonably priced car. On an Insurance Group 3, the cheapest Confused.com can offer him is £1800 p/a!!! Can anyone suggest what model car and which insurer might be best for him, as this is WAY out of their budget! Thanks!

Hi - they are being sensible enough by getting a quote on a Group 3 car but Group 1 or 2 would be a bit cheaper.Assume the car they have in mind is say 10 years old and they are looking for TPFT.

Do they have accidents/convictions or live in big town - if so none of these points will help.Is his fiancee' younger than 19? Again this is a factor which increases the price.

Might be worth trying for quote in fiancee's name if she has equal or major use of the car

Try quinn direct or ecarinsurance.co.uk or for fiancee' diamond.

Insurance for young drivers is more often than not expensive. As the aboverperson said Quinn is normally good for young drivers.#

    Also try confused.com and moneysupermarket.com.

Try Quinn Direct and Tesco. Tell him to get Pass Plus; even if it doesn't actually reduce his premium he might end up being a better driver and save money indirectly that way.

As for the car: presumably he needs five seats and five doors? What kind of use will he be getting out of it and what kind of budget does he have to spend on the car?

You might find that some group 3 cars are cheaper than other group 3 cars, or that some group 4 cars are cheaper than group 3 cars etc.

What I did was, get online quotes on a load of different cars (mainly group 2/3/4 cars) and compare them.

When I first got car insurance, I managed to get the premium down by having my Mum as a named driver - I know it doesn't work with all insurers but if there's an older relative with a good NCB and no points or convictions it may help! I also found Bell (part of Admiral) were very good. HTH!
