Male/Female Car Insurance

[SOLVED]

My Brother passed his driving test this morning and we've spent most the day looking for car insurance. Unfortunately he is a 17 year old male which means things don't fare well for him even with him as second name driver.

What we keep finding that if we search for quotes with my brother as male and then do the same thing but with my brother as female we find that there are huge differences in the quotes despite the EU directive stating that insurance companies cannot discriminate against people on basis of their gender. If we were to purchase car insurance with my brother listed as a female could the car insurance companies decline the car insurance if they find out that he's not.

Thanks

Conor

I know the feeling! However, i recently discovered Aviva car insurance, my quotes on the meerkat website and go compare were in the Region of £3000!!

However after a few tweaks, i cut it in half!

1: choose a cheap mass produced and small engined car. anything over 1.4 and your gonna struggle. Corsa's Clio's 106's thats it.
2: Find 3 people who have had their licences for 10 years, Parents Aunts Uncles etc. Even your next door neighbore will do. Add them as named drivers to his policy, so he is the main driver and has 3 named drivers.
3: His job role will come into play, if he is a student or unemployed these seem higher risk. So it may pay for him to get a job in both senses of the word. If he does have a job try out the money expert "job role" tweaker as this could save a couple of quid.
4: make sure the car has an alarm, it may cost a bit to fit but in the long run it will end up paying for itself in a few years.
5: Dont modify your first car, its daft and expensive.
6: Go instore to insurance places at the end of the month. They often have a few deals they would like to give out.
7: Be accurate on the mileage, sit and work out what miles he will do a week. As most people say 10'000 miles but this could be cut to 5000 easily. ( factor in insurance costs to those local trips)
8: shop arround and not on insurance comparison sites they are rubbish and take a commission from the sales through their website, so the insurance companies often bump up the price.
Aviva and Elephant are the cheapest in my opinion.
9: Be realistic with the excess. It can make a BIG difference in prices, but sometimes you have to factor in cases such as if your car is worth £1000 and your excess is set at a grand the likely hood is, they may not pay out! and often the difference between a £800 excess and £1000 excess is very very small ( about £15)
10: play around with named drivers, these will help out
my quotes on a 1.2 renault clio varied by 300 quid from £1999 to £1600 just by the named drivers being in a different order with Aviva. Having my old lady aunt first of the named drivers and my 30 year old brother as the last seemed to fluctuate the prices greatly!!!

This is taken from my experiance as a 19 year old male who passed his driving test last september after being a motorcyclist since i was 16 and realising i needed to grow up and have a car for work lol.
  • The reason the quotes are different is because the 'risk' to the insurer is different.

When a woman has an 'accident' it's likely something small like reversing into a shopping trolley at the supermarket. A man however will completely destroy 14 cars, a petrol station, a couple of houses and has the town centre closed for the rest of the day.

Guess which costs the insurer more? ;)

    I'm male, by the way.
