HSBC missing payment recovery

Hi,

In October last year I made an internet banking transfer of £200 to a friend. Unfortunately, he gave me his wife's sort code, but his account number, so it went to the wrong place...

I spoke to HSBC, who were very unhelpful, then to Natwest who were much more helpful, and said that all I had to do was insist that HSBC do a "missing payment recovery" and that Natwest would cooperate with this.

Unfortunately, HSBC say that because it was an internet transfer, they will not do anything to help, and it is entirely down to me to get my money back (all they could do was print a record of the transaction). I said there and then that I would close my account, but they wouldn't budge.

Any thoughts on what I can try next?

Thanks.
Jonathan.

  • HSBC are right! It was your error - Internet banking is fully automated you punch in the numbers, the amount and confirm your passwords and away you go.
If you have the sort code and account number send a letter via Nat West to their customer asking them to refund you.(They will not give you name and address - usual format is for you to seal your letter with stamp on and pencil customers details on front and ask staff member at NW to forward it on).
If their customer refuses or you do not get a reply within a reasonable timescale (14 days?) try and report it to the police as theft. I can't honestly say that they will be too interested and if so you may have to put it down to experience.

(Remember when you next get screen prompt ''Are you sure that wish to proceed?'' that you have checked the details.
