Magazine Subscriptions

Hi

Have a mild panic about something and hoping someone can clarify and help me out.

I've done a few magazine deals over the last few months and when they get to the end of the offer date like 6 for £6 etc I set a reminder and cancel the DD BUT I have never written in and cancelled with the company for any of them. Never had anything back from any of them about it so didnt think any more of it. But I have just looked on my bank there is two subscriptions still running one for Heat Mag (gotta love it and its my only extravagance!) and one for condenast which is for a deal I know I have to cancel in January. BUT I am still receiving Heat weekly and TWO fashion mags which means one of them I dont have a DD for and am not paying for but am still receiving?

Is this just good fortune or are they going to slap me with some debt order?

Thanks in advance x

Cancelling a form of payment is not the same as cancelling the contract.

If you read the terms and conditions, you will likely find you have to inform them in writing that you are cancelling and until you have done so, you are effectively still in agreement with them.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride

    Agreed, unless it was a time-specific contract (e.g. 12 issues for £X).

PS - Condenast do various publications, including Vogue.

Thanks they were all x issues for £x amount and cancelled DD at point of that amount of issues. Don't understand literally months later why I'm still getting Glamour and Cosmo. Not had any letters from them asking for payment infact have only had letters offering me new deals! Did a mac user mag for 3 issues too then stopped DD not received anymore and not heard from
them ? Still a bit confused really :-(

Just because something says x for £y doesn't mean you are not entering into a subscription based service. Infact the fact they are collecting paying by DD and not card payment tells me you have entered into a 'X for £y following by "£z/a issues' type contract.

If you haven't received further magazines from some or not paid anything further then you should seriously consider yourself lucky. Your actions (with respect) have been extremely naive, cancelling a DD is (as said) cancelling the form of payment and does not in any way or form cancel the agreement you have setup and are bound to.

If you are still receiving magazines without having cancelled the agreement, once their systems kick in they will invoice you for the amount outstanding -- for which you will be liable for payment.

    Please tread carefully in future.

To be honest this is why I very rarely start a thread and leave it to looking at grabbits and sometimes posting a grabbit for fear of being told off or shot down inflames. Why would you think you would need to tell me "please tread carefully"

The mag deals I'd entered into all came from grabbit board with advice to cancel dd after x issues (all the deals say you can cancel at any point) they are introductory offers. My failing seems to be to have not cancelled with the company itself which is all I was asking for clarification on and can easily be done.

I'm sure your intentions can't have been to offend me but to help however it came across as a proper telling off! :-(.

I really don't want to start a long conversation debating why what I've replied with now is also wrong just rest assured your 'advice' has been taken and duly noted.

By tread carefully, I simply meant since you are taking advantage of these offers please make sure you read the small print and fully understand the contract. I did not mean to seem like i'm telling you off and no offense was intended. :)

My point is the last thing anybody wants is for you to be back in a few months asking for advice because one of the magazines are chasing a debt for a non-cancelled subscription.

By all means continue taking advantage of the deals (afterall thats why the grabbits are posted, and as a money saver they offer excellent value), but be careful you cancel the contract as laid out in the terms correctly and not just the DD.
