B&Q Returning a shower

I bought a shower on Hogmanay from B&Q and had it installed that day. It was faulty and I returned it that same afternoon, looking for a replacement. I was told that they could not accept it as it had been installed and I should contact the manufacturer to send out an engineer. I argued enough and they agreed that on this occasion they would replace it but this was not their policy and they would not normally do this. Surely B&Q are responsible as they sold it to me and it was faulty. They say they do not accept items which have been installed. Where in the regulations does it say that installed items are different in the legality of returns.
Anyway, I got my replacement which was installed and works fine. What a fun New Year's Day that was. But was I right to go back to B&Q for a replacement or even a refund if I had wanted?
