Does anybidy know where my sister can go to get an autism diagnosise for herself in stoke on trent?
She went to the GP who stated that they dont do that in the area.

I was diagnosed as on the spectrum 4 months ago and it has made my whole life make sense.

It's not SoT but it is in the 'sort-of' local area.....St Chads House (used to be part of the old St Georges Hospital) in Stafford. I know that they used to do Adult diagnoses, and they are NHS....the doctor I know has left the country but I', guessing they have replaced him with another specialist!

    Hi.
    http://www.autism.org.uk/about-autism/all-about-diagnosis/diagnosis-the-process-for-adults.aspx
The NAS helpline on this page might be useful. It is difficult to obtain an assessment for ASD as an adult as services are patchy but it is possible. It is also worth your sister considering what she hopes to gain from diagnosis. There is very little provision for adults with ASD who do not have significant problems with self-care or mental health needs. So your sister may learn enough from reading the many books written by adults to find strategies that might help.Even things like reasonable adjustments in work only apply where an individual needs them.

Unfortunatly my sister does have self care needs and mental health issues, she also has 2 children and is under social services because she can not keep her house clean/tidy ( is unhygenic).
I am hoping a diagnosise will help her get the support she clearly needs :o

  • What happens if she does not get a diagnosis? Playing amateur doctor is rarely helpful.

Is she under the CMHT for her MH problems?

People only ever want a diagnosis when they can gain from it, there are no "good" reasons to seek diagnosis.

That's just untrue - many adults seek Autism dx's for "answers" to their past and it's certainly not the case that they all ask for help, many don't even tell anyone other than close family about their diagnosis.

Your car is clunking - you want to know why. Your tap doesnt stop dripping - you want to know why. If you cannot hold a conversation with other adults, are terrified of new situations, cant get your thoughts in order - you want to know why. Often being diagnosed with such a complex condition is like being told you are broken, but it is not your fault and whilst you may never be fixed, you can at least get the support you need.

wrong, totally wrong, I have never felt anything like that in my life but then again I didnt go looking for my diagnosis, it found me and as such I have never used it for gain ;)
  • I was diagnosed by the Transition & Liasion Team at St Mary's Kettering.

I didn't go looking to get diagnosed though & only did be because my 2 sons were and they're consultant wrote to my go stating that he believed I might have it too.

I was actually diagnosed with Personality Disorder to begin with so I am glad I got my diagnosis even if I still haven't managed to come to terms with it yet.

From personal experience I don't think your sister will get any more support than she does now though tbh as I've never been offered any.

Infact now they know I have asperger's the mental health team has closed my case as they say they can't help me.
