How much damage should Double Glazing installation create?

In the middle of having all the windows in my house replaced and I've noticed that there are gaping holes around the windows through which you can see daylight!! I am assuming that this is not the way they will look when the fitting is complete but then again, I know virtually nothing about Double Glazing. Is some damage to be expected?

Had mine done years ago and i think there was gaps prior to finishing, Im sure it will be fine when you see the end result, unless its The John Wayne double glazing company.
  • I had mine done about 5 years ago and there was no noticeable damage. Everything was left really clean and tidy. I've moved house since then and recently had then done again and this time around there was dust etc everywhere and they made a right mess of the walls. they plastered the holes but almost every room needs decorating now so I'm not happy :(

I thought that with a little mix and maybe if you need shingle they make good.Ok expect to have to paint the wall maybe but gapping holes or edges.I thought that's why you had the windows put in to keep the draughts out:eek:
Unless they said before the start of the job that your stone work was weak.
Sounds like more money to me....I guess it needs to be factored in at the start.

I knew I had trouble with my walls is when the builder turned up and roped his horse to the hook in the wall only for the horse to pull it out.

I had french doors fitted last year which involved removing a large section of wall beneath an existing window as well as removing the window. I expected to have to redo the wallpaper on that wall around the window but they managed to do it without even disturbing the wallpaper! I also had wooden architrave around the original window. They matched that up flawlessly as well. Amazingly, they also did it all in half a day and left barely any dust even though they'd cut through bricks! They even put in wooden trim to cover where there was a missing bit of carpet as a result of the wall being removed which, again, I hadn't expected. Similarly, my parents had all their windows replaced recently and new patio doors put in. All they had to do was touch up a little bit of paint.

I think that you should expect a bit of dust and a little bit of remedial decorating around the new window but that's all. If there's anything more don't pay them until you're happy!

  • Thanks guys!!

I don't care about the fitters disturbing the decor as we are currently renovating the house and will need to decorate the whole thing anyway. I was just alarmed to see all the gaps!

Fingers crossed, they'll sort them out :)

  • we had all our windows and doors replaced a few years ago and there was minimal damage in fact the only thing was that a piece of border got ripped but it was in a place that you couldnt see, so nothing needed done afterwards and the workmen even swept up their dust and tidied up afterwards. So I dont think you should have any gaps etc but I suppose it depends on who is doing the job
