Do any of you wear glasses but only for driving?

Hi all,

I had my eyes lasered in 2004 and unfortunately my eyes have slightly worsened since then.

I now have a prescription of -0.50 in my left eye and -1.00 in my right eye. I have decided to get some glasses to sharpen my night vision when driving.

I dont need glasses for anything else, other than this. I am waiting for my glasses to be delivered but I am worried I will end up becoming reliant on them and I dont want to have to wear them all the time again like I did 7/8 years ago.

Do any of you just wear glasses for driving, and also just at night time? Do you find you need to wear them for anything else you didnt need to before?

I typically drive for about 20 minutes in the dark on the way home from work, so unless I go driving other places at night I should usually only wear them 20+ mins a day and in the summer even less due to the lighter evenings. I just dont want to have to wear them all again.

I dont know anyone who only wears glasses for driving so I have no other peoples experience on the matter to take note of.

I look forward to your responses.

Thank you.

My eyes are a bit worse than yours and I don't constantly wear them, only for driving, cinema and anything else I want good eye sight for, like music gigs, theatre, sight seeing. Sitting here with my laptop I don't have them on. But sometimes I have to put them on if I haven't for a while otherwise I get headaches.
  • How long have you been wearing them?

Yeah I probably would have to wear them for the other things you specified, I went to see Lee Evans and it was just pointless as I couldnt see his face at all. But I dont want to have to end up wearing them around the pool on holiday or if I take them off not be able to see my daughter in the pool etc if you see what I mean?

I dont need to wear them for watching the TV at home, at other peoples houses its a little unclear depending on where the TV is located to where I am sitting and I dont struggle during the day time driving.

I just am hoping I will be able to limit the use to night time driving and it not have an effect on other activities.

Some people say glasses make your eyesight worse, others say it doesnt make a difference - just not sure which is true.

I have driving glasses - clear with anti-glare coating for nightime, and tinted for sunny days. I often wear them for watching tv when my eyes are tired, and always when watching rugby in the summer as it's a long way to the far touch line from our seats up in the stand!
  • Thanks, but you dont find that you need them for other things such as going round the shops etc that you didnt need them for prior to getting a pair for driving?

I am so annoyed that the laser eye surgery didnt last as I am only 28 but thats just life - but I just have a thing about not wanting to wear them on holiday/around the house where I dont need them presently. I am just hoping wearing them dont make the prescription worsen.

I started wearing glasses for driving around 9 years ago
as you say it was noticable at nights I just wasnt seeing as well as i used to

I can still drive without them if needed but its just not safe
I wear them day to day now(i did wear contacts for a few years but an eye injury saw me return to glasses)
I wear the glasses most of the time now
if i do a lot of PC work without them then i can feel it in my eyes later in the day
  • Hmmmm well I do need them for the night time driving, but thats it. I just hoping I dont end up needing them all the time again.
  • I started wearing glasses when I was 11 years old, for seeing the board at school, computer work etc. Since then (12 years) I have had to start wearing glasses all the time, this started when I was 16 or so. I did not drive at this time but was told that if I were not to wear my glasses full time I would have to wear them for driving and other things. I now can't live without them. I never wear dark glasses unless specifically sunglasses as I hate them. I am scared of getting laser eye surgery. I am around -3.00 in each eye I think, my brother had his eyes lasered years ago when trying to get into the met police and when given my glasses now, he can see better than without them. In my opinion, lasering just slows down the inevitable...
  • I don't wear glasses mysel but my husband does. He used to only wear them for driving at night, but a couple of years ago he started having to wear them a lot during the day. Gradually he has had to wear them more and more when driving and now is feeling like he needs to wear glasses most of the time.

But he is a lorry driver so obviously does a lot more driving than you do, if he was only wearing them 20 minutes a day he may well still only be wearing them for nighttime driving, but the amount he has to wear them, may well mean that he has become more reliant on them quicker than what you may. I hope that makes sense.

  • Yep that makes sense, thanks. I need them so there is no getting around it, I dont fancy laser eye surgery re-treatment.

The optician says that its up to me, I can wear them if I want or leave it if I think I can manage without. Obviously I can manage without as I have been doing so but at night its a struggle especially if it is in an area I dont know - driving to the shops isnt a problem.

I am annoyed at spending out on the laser surgery and it not lasting.

Wearing your glasses does NOT make your eyes worse - it just makes you see better! This is one of those myths which refuses to die.

Regarding the laser surgery, not sure what you were expecting there. The surgeon should have explained to you at the time that the surgery only corrects your eyes as they are at the time of the op - it doesn't stop the march of time. As you age, your eyes will continue to change, regardless of whether you've had the surgery. 7-8 years isn't bad - most people would require a change of spectacle prescription in that time, depending on how well they want to see.
