When trying to buy insurance from Admiral, since it was quote which was covered by their "low mileage scheme" ( I estimate 5000) was notified that a 'box' would need to be fitted to montor mileage.

No problem with that

However when asked what the charges would be for going over mileage, was told they couln't tell me the charges, just give a vague assurance that 'only interested in going '000s over' - refused to give any furher info

Given how insistant they (ins co's) are that we give them all the correct info - how can they expect anyone to purchase on this basis, when they can't give relavent info ?

Anyone any experience of Admiral low mileage scheme and possible additional charges ?

Ones (not Admiral though) I've been with have simply stated my insurance will lapse at the stated mileage.

I only do a low mileage but i can't actually remember them asking me what the mileage on the car was, i presume if they wanted to check they'd ask for my Mot. But would they take an average over the time you'd been with them or just that year. For example if you'd been insured for 10yrs and only driven less than a thousand miles a year but then had a year when you drove 10k miles, would they take the low years to work out an average.

  • Do you have a link to the policy as cannot see anything on the Admiral site about it.

Normally insurance is a 12 month contract and therefore consideration is only given to one year and not an aggregate over multiple policy years but you need to read the exact wording

They specifically stated that a box would need to be fitted - so there is no estimation involved
the line under the quote on confused says
"Exclusive: Admiral low milage scheme - price includes discount - only available by phone"
I can't find any info about that scheme on admiral site either
and when I called was told box would need to be fitted but they were unable/unwilling to clarify anything about 'excess' charges

this policy is for a young driver

Link : some other refernces to this 'box' policy : ( some colourful language)

not on my own PC at the moment so can't provide screen shots etc at the mo

A further call to them didn't get much more info.

The mileage you are stating is your maximum - not an estimate !

its up to you to check on line and if getting close to the stated limit call them to top up the miles - they won't /can't say what this might cost - its too variable apparently !
i.e. you found you had hit limit at 6 months in compared to 11.5 months in.

So as Mikey said, looks like it lapses if you don't/ forget to check how close you are to limit.
Moving the mileage setting in confused from 5000 to 6000 - removes the requiment to have a box and only puts preimium up by 10% ish - but at least you know that cost up front

Without a link to the policybook or a section of the Admiral website about it then it is going to be hard for anyone else to comment on it. Given the low profile nature of the product I'd guess they are just rebadging someone elses product but I could be wrong.

Well that is part of my gripe about this, the lack of written info and/or clarity about the whole scheme
