US Bank Account

Hi,
My wife is registered as an international student (although she now has British Citizenship, but this was after she had been studying for a few years, so can't claim home fees or anything like that).
She is coming to the end of her PhD studies and the USA loan companies are now starting to 'bay' for their money. She doesn't have an account anymore over in the US, so the only way at the moment she can pay the loan is to use a money order, which takes time to produce and has fees etc.
I was thinking that it would be nice to get a currency account of some sort so that we can arrange for money to go in there and then a direct debit/deposit to be setup to pay her loan automatically. But looking at Citibank, they appear to require proof of income (20,000 plus) and at the moment aside from odd-temporary jobs she is focusing solely on getting the PhD done, so isn't in a proper job. She will be applying once she gets the viva/thesis defense out of the way though.
Anyway, this is my long-winded way of saying. Does anyone know of any currency accounts in the UK that allow sterling deposits to be translated into US dollars, and DD without needing proof of income? I can't apply for one myself because my credit isn't good enough.
Thanks in advance!
