Hi all -
I'm in a 4 bed detached house and am on British Gas' dual fuel fixed price tariff which finishes at the end of January 2012. From recent bills, I am using the following amounts of energy annually:
Gas 14992KWH p.a.
Electricity 4679KWH p.a.
British Gas have quoted me £1019 as their cheapest quote (Online energy with EnergySmart). Having looked at Energylinx and Moneysupermarket, British Gas don't appear in their list of cheapest providers/deals at all and yet the cheapest cost they've both quoted is £1066.
Surely both figures can't be correct?
Anyone any ideas/views on what I should therefore do, given this information? I appreciate that BG have a reputation as not being the cheapest supplier around but I don't want to go to loads of hassle changing suppliers if it's not going to make any difference or actually cost more.
Confused!
Any advice would be much appreciated!

Don't quite undestand why BG have not appeared on the Energylynx/Moneysupermarket Switch sites
However, it's rare that any supplier automatically offers their cheapest deal to customers coming to the end of a tariff deal - If you have had a verbal offer from BG with an annual cost below anything on the Switch sites, the best advice is to get it in writing
Have a look at the 'switchwithwhich' web site. This lists all the suppliers prices in ascending order as usual, but on each one there is a "Tariff Compare" icon - Press this and it comes up with that suppliers tariff in fine detail directly alongside that of your present tariff0 -
Thanks for the response - the figures I've been quoted from BG were on their own website when one filled in the amounts of energy consumed (gas and electricity) and the figures were also sent to me in an email from them so I guess they're saying it's possible. They've quoted it as:
Online Energy tariff
£1193.99
or with EnergySmart £1018.99 (Includes an additional saving of upto £175). They state that this £175 comprises: "savings of £50 against our Standard tariff prices for Online Energy customers (who receive a 4% discount on their unit rates below our Standard tariff prices); and savings of up to £125 by reducing consumptionby 12% (by using the EnergySmart online consumption hub and electricity monitor). Savings are versus a customer with average annual consumption of 16,500 kWh for gas and 3,300 kWh for single rate electricity, paying by Monthly Direct Debit on our Standard tariff prices as at 29th November 2011.Savings are a rounded average across all regions including VAT. Actual savings will vary depending on individual circumstances."
Does this therefore mean that the £1018 is therefore purely theoretical and I would therefore be more likely looking at £1193 or thereabouts which is obviously more than the £1066 being quoted elsewhere? (Sorry if I'm being a dullard!):o0 -
Did you tick the box:
"Only see products available through moneysupermarket.com?"
Tick NO.0 -
It's not only purely theoretical, it's akin to the spiel used by the doorstep Utility sellers determined to earn a chunk of commission - It is your annual consumption of Gas & Elec Kilowatt hours, (Kwh), that determines your annual cost, not a notional sum of money based on an artificial national average.
You have your Kwh consumptions, use them on switchwithwhich for a clear view of the whole market0
