used to backup files to CD-RW's but not working..

i used to backup files on to CD-RW's BUT for some reason [prob corrupt windows!!] cannot save/back up anymore to CDs..(can still play songs from CDs so dunno whats wrong...)

if i buy an extrenal hard drive thingie to backup to save everything in case of emergency will this new hard drive work if cant use the internal windows cd reader

my computer guy wants to reformat windows overnight but that scares me as i know i'll lose lotsa stuff!

also, if i get an external hard drive thingie - any recommendations & price indications?

Have you considered a USB stick instead of HDD, depends how much data you have really but they are a lot easier to carry about. I keep my USB stick in my pocket, can't do that with a hdd :)
