I loved solitaire as a child and have a board with marbles somewhere in the house as it got packed up last time we moved and I havent found it yet (only been here 6 1/2 years ) my 10 year old DS loves scrabble, chess, mastermind and boggle, has done since he was very little and I still giggle at the memory of my mum screaming 'YES' at the top of her lungs when she finally beat him at mastermind . . . he was 3 :rotfl: :rotfl:

I really love Chinese Chequers and Scrabble. My children will play both (and Solitaire) but what they really love is Monopoly. Luckily we have a vintage style set with a board identical to the one I had as a child, so when I'm forced to play, at least I don't have to look at the modern version which I think is ugly....also I don't have to think in millions, which helps!
My children can play chess though to my shame I can't. Did used to play draughts though.
We also play Rummikub, various versions of Patience, gin rummy, poker and of course Snap. Last year we got a brilliant board game called Cat Attack which is very amusing if you are a family of cat-lovers. I'd recommend it to anyone with kids over about 8.

Ohhh, we played Rummikub as a family, so much so when DS and I moved out our Mum bought us both the game.

Every so often we still have nights in playing it, DS is a demon and usually wins unless we ban her from playing all the numbers in colur sets!

  • I was given a Rubik's cube last year - that kept me distracted for weeks on end. I couldn't master it in the 80's and I can't master it now but I do keep going back to it every week or so to try.

My favourite as a teenager was mastermind - it was coloured pegs which , if I remember correctly, had to be slotted into the correct order. I guess the principle is similar to solitaire.

I also spent many hours engrossed with a spirograph set and coloured pens. Every christmas my mother bought me a new set of coloured felt tip pens or pencils and a colouring book like this.

You've set me thinking - for a few pounds I could while away some time and revert back to my childhood. I better stop before I find myself searching the web for sequinart sets!

I loved Othello too. I was heartbroken when my sister ''lost'' some of the pieces.

I remember Othello too - also called Reversi.

Anyone heard of 'Shut the Box'?

We used to play this in our local pub (for 1p a go) years ago.

It's pretty good for teaching kids to add up, I bought one for my OH years ago and we still play it occasionally.

It seems to have pretty good reviews on Amazon.

When I was growing up, we often played a game at home that I knew as 'Solitaire'. (Not the card game.)

It was a circular board with small silver balls and you had to jump over one ball at a time to get rid of them all bar one. I think you also got a 'peg' solitaire too.

I found a nice wood version in Past Times before Xmas. It was reduced in their sale and was going to be wrapped up and put under the tree as a present to me, from me. :D

I forgot all about it however, and have only just found it again today.

Daughter is now engrossed. And very quiet. Well worth £7. :D

I've completely forgotten how do do it though and have only got down to 4 'men' left. :o I expect she'll have it sussed shortly and will be Miss Smug soon.

Do any of yours play 'traditional' type games?

ha ha,my 11 year old and i played this last night.picked it up cheap from somewhere.its a wooden board with marbles.he loves the challenge of it.

    we also played cards recently,too.

i just wanted him to have a break from the DS/ipod/tv.
