Car w/ broken gear box - repair or new car?!
Comments

This garage also doesnt use reconditioned ones as they have too many problems that come back to haunt them. !
That's because they're responsible if there's a problem with it. If you supply the gear box then they'll no doubt fit it, but won't accept any liability for any issues that you might have.0 -
With the Hondas a recommended rebuilder is the way to go. A secondhand or "reconned" one is likely to fail just the same as they are a recurring black mark against Hondas once great reputation.0

yip bullet proof rep once.
now reliable car, but tinfoil gearboxes you have been warned!! a crying shame honda decided to go this way in development.0 -
Thanks guys. You know your stuff! We've decided to trust our local garage (been going to them a while) and their contact who will rebuild the gearbox. They give a year warranty on it too. Who knows how much it'll cost though?! Over the phone the mechanic gives a ballpark figure but don't you find that you never know what the final cost might be until they're all done and dusted? That's normal right?0

No. I would want a firm figure before work started. In other words a fixed quote, not an estimate.
I'd also have shopped around as the £2k estimate seems very high indeed. The car isn't worth much more than that is it?0 -
agree you need to cap their works figure, if they say £995 then tell them £995's worth of work to be completed no more if you reach this limit you are to down tools and contact me with a fixed end price as more will be known at that time.
to give an estimate at this time sounds about right, the company has not assessed the box, they dont know whether the box is repairable, or whether just bearings need doing or a full rebuild, all three have different impacts on price given.
OP here i would state that before they go ahead and repair the box but after assessment, you want a quote then you give them the cap amount to work buy.0 -
Thanks again. The original local garage has had the car 5 days and done nothing with it. Got fed up, rang another local garage (which we've never used before but is 100yards away from other one!) and they said 2000 is ridiculous and have estimated 1000. They promise to ring to keep us updated on pricings and so we moved car over to them. Should've rung around on the first day! Still, hopefully going to save some money and get a better service.
I like the tip about the cap amount. Thanks.0
