13 weeks pregnant...too soon to buy?

My sister is 13 weeks pregnant and obviously because of the sales, we're thinking about getting little bits eg breast pump, bottles, etc etc. Nothing like pushchairs or cots, just little bits. So many things are half price at the moment and I imagine its unlikely that these kind of sales will be around nearer the time. My question is, is it too soon to buy these bits and bobs?
Thanks

  • I don't think it's too early to buy, I did when I was newly pregnant. Although I would say, don't be worried about buying things now as they're in the sale. You'll find many items will regularly be reduced throughout. I bought my steriliser in Tesco when it was half price, and regularly still see it on the same offer. Babies'r'us regularly reduce items too.

I was the opposite and didn't buy anthing until i was 28 weeks pregnant just in case

Its very individual though so if you see it cheap and need it its up to you!

I'm 35 weeks pregnant and done the same thing, but there is always something on offer somewhere. Boots regularly do 1/3 off bottles, sterilisers, breast pumps etc. If I was you I'd wait, keep the money aside that way you'l have it closer to the time.

One thing I would advise your sister to do is join all the baby clubs she can, Boots, Tesco, Sainsburys, Asda, Aptamil etc. She will get loads of money off vouchers sent.

In my last Boots parenting magazine I got sent a voucher for money off Breast Pumps, which if they were already on offer you'd get a great deal.

Although at the moment Tesco Extras are selling the Medela Swing Breast Pump for £45, (I paid £100 for mines) and it's supposed to be one of the best on the market, so if you could find one, I'd advise buying that now as I've never seen it as cheap.

It's up to you. There's no such thing as 'tempting fate' so whether you buy stuff or not has no bearing on whether it will be used. Why not buy it but don't give it to her yet? That way you don't run the risk of her feeling it's too soon and you still get the benefit of the sales.

I'm fifteen weeks and I've bought nothing but that's only because I'm lazy :D

I'd had a really nasty history of miscarriages - but even I started picking stuff up at 12 weeks - just small stuff (generally clothes, packs of wipes and the like) and squirrelling them away somewhere where I wasn't going to constantly come across them if the worst did happen. Felt terrified doing it and have left the larger stuff till now (just got the all clear from the 20 week scan - now that's moneysaving planning that for the start of the January sales!) . Don't get too worried about needing to get everything in Jan though - I think the Asda baby event's usually March-ish, and we actually got a steriliser, pump, storage pots, carry bag and bottle and teat pack a LOT cheaper on a special offer before the sales had started.

Thank you all for your replies and congratulations on your pregnancies!
She doesn't have an email address so I made her one last night and signed her up to babies r us newsletters, will be signing her up to everything I can possibly find to help with moneysaving and for tips etc!
  • I also have a history of miscarriages but I waited until 24 weeks before buying anything! But with my DS I started buying before 13 weeks.

I think it's completly your decision. Just remember that you get so many coupons and money off vouchers, try not to spend to much at the start... pick up the mothercare 'card' pack and you get loads of coupons... and same at toys R' us! By the time I got them I had bought so much i couldn;t make the most of them!!!

    Good luck x

Massive congratulations on your sisters pregnancy,

The one thing would say is re feeding I know your sister thought about breast pumps, when I had DD I was told by the midwifes that they don't recommend breast pumps for about 6 weeks, I had planned to breast feed, I had near size dolly partons, but unfortunately they were drier than a well, Id brought breast pump about mth before I was due and Boots refunded as it was boxed up, but its a thing I would say wait till the time. xx

I lost my first pregnancy and in my second one I waited till I was about 30 weeks before even considering buying anything. I have since had two more miscarriages and if I ever get successfully pregnant again I won;t bebuying a thing till the baby is born.

I know its a bit different, I already have stuff now, but I think 13 weeks is way too early. You just never know what's going to happen and there are always sales etc.

  • If you want to, buy it, but don't give it to her to put in her house. It's still very early and she hasn't had the anomaly scan yet.
